DCT Shifter boot change warning
Just a warning to anyone thinking about changing their dct shift knob boot. I wasn’t careful enough cutting the old one off near the shifter and best I can tell I just barely nicked a bit of one of the wires with my razor blade. Now about 1/3rd if the time I go to start the car I get a “Transmission malfunction” warning the the car won’t go into gear until I clear all the codes and reset. The codes are gear shifter related voltage ones as well. Best I can tell when the car turns on it self tests the voltages to the dct shift knob and bricks it if it doesn’t like what it sees. About left me stranded if I didn’t have a obd tool with me.

Why not remove the center console cover? It takes no time or effort.

Let me rephrase. I had the shift knob/boot off and out of the car. I was cutting the old boot off around shifter base because the new one I had didn’t go all the way up and around the front of the shift knob. I was just surprised the transmission wouldn’t go into gear. Figured a light on the knob would just not work. Shoulda been more careful

I see what happened here. Definitely a bummer dude. You should be able to inspect and repair whatever wire/wires you broke though. Don't think this would require a replacement knob unless you somehow damaged the entire harness.

It will go into gear without the knob at all. You can leave it completely disconnected. From what I remember mine didn’t even say trans malfunction.
