Alex at Alpine running rich?

Raced a mustang today, he was behind me and at the next light told me the car was producing clouds of black smoke, pig rich.

That’s corroborated by the copious amounts of black soot that builds on my bumper within 50 miles of washing the car.

Car drives fine.

Anyone had a similar experience?

Are the other tunes, BPM, having the same issues)

Tune is a stage ii, no cats.

Put the car on a dyno and get air-fuel ratio reading. Running too rich is bad for the engine.

But no, I don't have this issue with my BPM Stage 2, no cats.

my bpm supercharger tune runs pretty clean. you will find generic ots tunes are really not one size fits all, mapping the car to work has alot to do with location, condition of the engine, etc.

I’m on Alpine Stage 2 and I don’t have that problem. Very clean but I don’t drive hard too much. Could it be an injector issue? Fuel smell?

Trying going back to stock tune to see if the smoke stops. Just to isolate if it's a tune problem or something else.

12,000 miles Alpine stage 2.

I’ve had the same issue. In fact, my car threw a CEL for running too rich. A vacuum hose on the Haimus Plenum had wiggled loose.
Plugs changed, plenum snugged tight and no more CEL. But, I’m running rich- you can see it inside the tips.
Obviously fully catless and quad resonated is a factor, but I’m considering a custom tune to dial it in for my plenum, intake, and exhaust.

I have alpine tune and quad resonated fully catless also. My car doesn't smoke, although it's pretty stinky and I do get carbon in the exhaust tips and the bumper does get dirty but not black soot like you described.

For those of you running BPM catless tune, does your car stink? I don't notice it in the car at all, even with the windows down unless I am sitting at a light I'll smell it a bit.

Similar experience and config [Alpine Stage II, quad resonators], 'excessive' carbon build up on tips; fortunately, none on diffuser/bumper.

Switched to Shell 91 Nitro-V, smell dissipated after a few tanks...but still carbon on tips.

I’m running Alpine stage 2 with akra evo exhaust which has sport cats and resonators. Not running rich, no sign of soot on the bumper and no buildup on the exhaust tips. There is a little smell with windows down but nothing obnoxious.

Yes it does smell. Any fully decat car will smell, regardless of whether it's tuned or not.

Have none of you Alpine stage 2 owners done a dyno with afr reading? That should be the first thing you do after a tune to confirm if afr is in the correct range.

I would say that 80% of all people who get an ots tune done dyno their car alpine or not.

That's the first thing I do after a tune. Running too lean/rich can cause major engine damage. Running too lean causes excessive cylinder and exhaust temps causing cracked pistons, blocks and headers. Too rich runs the risk of bore wash and bore scoring.

You could just run logging software and do various pulls on the highway. But yes, checking AFR is smart!
