Thanks for the link. I now remember reading this back around the time it was published, but as you point out, BMW has since adopted the belt driven system across their lineup on the B47, B57, and B58.

Perhaps the next generation of gas/diesel models will switch to an integrated system. However, it would seem that the window is closing. We already know much of the G70 model lineup, and it is very PHEV and BEV heavy. Given that focus, is it worth investing more in the MHEV engines at this point? The lifespan could be limited since it is entirely conceivable that, starting with the following generation at the end of this decade, every model in the entire BMW lineup will be PHEV or BEV.

I think the direction they choose with the B48, since it has not yet received a 48V system, could be a good indicator of where they will go. Alternately, the S58 that you mentioned and the upcoming new S68 are also slated for 48V, so those present another possibility to begin the switch to ISG. But for right now, I don't think we can call this a slam dunk.

Be noted, the 48v talked about here is the ISG system (check Mercedes I6 and V8 48Vs), not the way too technologically inferior BSG system found from current B58 variants.

Do we know for sure that BMW won’t add a 48v hybrid system to the S58 engine until production ends for the G80,G82 and G87?It would be nice to know because i don’t want a hybrid M car.

We don't know for sure. However, forum member lemetier has strongly hinted that it will come sometime during the G8x run.

It would be nice to know because i don’t want a hybrid M car.

These aren't hybrids in the traditional sense. It's basically an evolution of the 12V electrical system found in cars for a century or more. It allows for efficiency gains through brake energy regeneration and provides a small electric power assist to the engine.

However, there is indeed a small weight penalty attributed to the additional hardware, and I think that auto start/stop can no longer be switched off (but that could theoretically change for M models).

It's highly unlikely BMW are going to leave Europe without an M2 to buy for the best part of 2.5 yrs. The new 2 series is due out sometime this year, so expect M2 within 6 months of that.

I should have put "so would expect M2 within 6 months of that". Not based on anything other than the fact that M cars rarely come out several years after new model is released. Also, I'm in the market for a new car in 2022, so hoping the new M2 will be out by then

This isn't a fact though. It's false.

M cars routinely come out several years after a new model is released. I'll let you confirm that on your own. A good place to start would be the F22 and F87 release dates.

I don't consider having 48V as being hybrid. Especially with ISG, it's basically just getting a much more powerful starter alternator motor mounted in between the engine and transmission. So that:
1) Brake energy recycled much faster
2) All engine accessories to be electric driven, way more reliability and efficiency (Ask E92 M3 owner how they gets an instant 20-30whp by just using a smaller pulley)
3) ISG adds noticeable and instant torque at low down where the S58 is lacking the most.
4) ISG can even power the supercharging system (MB I6 EQ boost).

I consider all of above very traditional ICE techs.

For the readers outside North America: G81 will start production in November 2022 and have a full run up to the end of production of G21. There will be a single model: Comp xDrive. As expected, it will be in LCI configuration (for instance, the new i4 widescreen dash will be standard). As far as I can see, everything that you can have on a G80, will be available on G81.

Expected SOP dates for new models:
November 2022:
G81 M3 Touring Competition xDrive. (Or is it M3 Competition xDrive Touring? Or M3 Competition Touring xDrive? These days - no one knows.)
