Kinda bringing up an old thread.

Will DIY flashing to 241E pass California smog? The smog requirement now checks for modified DME with a checksum value to verify it matches factory settings.

Are you talking about modified binary injection with MSS60 or just reffering to 241E update?

The 241E update. Would that create a wrong checksum when they check?

241E is a factory update, the checksum would be on file with CA.

Not exactly, because the "checksum" and what they are looking for to ascertain whether a file is factory or not are mutually exclusive.

241E is a really illogical version to flash to, particularly from the version prior to it - not going to explain why, but there is a reason why we do not elect upgrades to it. Anyone looking to take on the risk of flashing their ECU and not trust a professional to do it should really seek the previous version

Regardless, they are checking the Calibration ID and Calibration Verification Number, to match the values on record - it is a mode 9 OBD request, irrespective of the checksum. When we refer to a checksum, we are describing a value/range involved with the end result of a calculation performed by the ECU to ensure its software integrity is valid. If the checksum calculation was incorrect or not bypassed, the ECU would not function as it would be unable to verify with itself. The CVN/Cal ID are potentially related/tied into to this, depending on the software structure - but rather indirectly. Calculation of checksum/CVN also varies depending on the ECU family.

The short answer, a stock unmodified file will not have issues, whether a stock file from 2008, or the latest available one (IIRC the latest was released after 2016, and the version prior to it, 2012ish. Keep in mind there are also multiple CVNs (in this ECU, 2 are returned) so it's possible to have a "stock" calibration but fail to have the correct value if the ECU was previously tampered with/not flashed back to stock correctly.

Is it possible to select a "previous version" when flashing via winKFP?

I know you said you didn't want to explain, but why does 241E stand out vs other versions for possibly failing a smog check?

I also have a tuned F30, but I plan to flash it to "stock and lock" when I have to smog it.

I find the new smog requirements pretty crazy. Rather than checking for modified ECUs, they should just do a roller test to see if a car actually passes smog.

CARB don't trust the sniffer test because it can be easily be defeated as VW has shown with the dieselgate lol. Pretty sure chances of that happening are way out the window.

They were doing non-sniffer testing even before that happened.

A non tampered ECU would not fail a checksum test anyway so this current check would not catch a manufacturer cheating.

Yup. Just saying it's highly unlikely a sniffer will suffice instead of carb eo

I successfully updated to the latest DME version from 80E.

Got the bimmergeeks "Expert" cable. Figure I didn't want to chance any problems over $20.

Installed the bimmergeeks standard tools and sp daten.

I tried flashing a small module 1st... tried doing the IHKA, the climate control. It successfully updated the module but I had an error message and would not work. Googled it and it was because I had to code it after updating. I followed someone online's steps to do it through ncs expert and default code it.

I ordered a 30 amp battery charger after asking Sangria about it. I had a 5 amp battery tender but he said that won't cut it.

I set everything up and did the flash. Here is where it is different:

It went smoothly but at 70%, the windshield wipers came on. I was wondering WTF is going on. The progress bar kept moving to 100%. At 100%, it sat there. No finished message.

I clicked the Prog ZB-Update button again (it wasn't greyed out). It asked if I wanted to update. The ZBNr were the same as it was before the update. I ran the program again (or continued the program?). The progress bar jumped from 0-100 in a few seconds and there was a finished message. The ZBNr was updated now.

I started the car and everything is running fine. No error messages. I drove the car around, it felt smooth, low rpm response is much better than before. No more big jump in power at 6k rpm. It now pulls smoothly from any rpm.

This whole process took less than 30 minutes.

Yeah thats a good one! I have my old Stanley 40 amp, the auto coooling fan option stop working, then i got a new fan and connected directly to 12V, since then i have 0 issue and they do not produce 40 amp version anymore for some reason!

I actually purchased a different Schumacher. But same 30amp. This one was $30 cheaper than the one Sangria mentioned. Right now it looks like the same cost.
