before the work manuals were available on the internet. It was simply necessary to buy the timing tool, the patient and the thoroughness. The fitters cost me approximately 700euros each, as a preventive measure I replaced the four.

Just checked mine and they're normal. I can only imagine what a pain it would be to replace these.

The actual work itself isn’t too bad, just the special tools needed are slightly hard to come by at your local hardware store 😭

As luck would have it I found a kit by Baum for $300 new an hour south of me, and should be here by end of the week.

So I've decided to tackle this one in my garage. I've already started to buy the necessary equipment and parts; also decided this is a great time to replace my disgusting LH valve cover.

Doing plenty of reading up and reviewing the procedures from BMW, and will try my hand at a DIY thread (with this one linked) to try and give back to the forum which continues to help me out anytime I got a question.

Thanks to everyone and their feedback, especially Etansinsta! I'm super grateful I came across this post!

I still reckon its best to stick with the oem setup. something about metal in there seems a bit suspect if anything were to happen.

figured i would update this for anyone feeling lost with regards to the replacement of these plastic covers.

I was able to speak with Carbahn/Dinan and source their metal "covers".

Some photos are attached below.

So...their special "covers" are large stainless "washers", then.

Are they completely flat plates with a simple center bore, or do they have any pins/protrusions, of any kind, on the rear surface...?

Interested in what some of the s65 pro guys here have to say about this...

DINAN are very much pros.

Here he talking about how they modified them for racing. Forget the time stamp but it's near the end. He said less rod bearings the S65 is there best engine BMW ever made….not best V8, best engine, which I thought was amazing.

I guess if the main job is just to keep the VANOS spring from unseating itself that would be a great cheap long term fix. But without seeing the underside of the washer it's hard to say if its completely flat or if there are any additional stuff under there.

I don't know how you possibly gathered that I "haven't heard of Dinan" from what I wrote...nor why you think the owning of an S65 equipped E90 ties me to them somehow.

I also own a MCoupe, an E61, and an E36 ITS race car...and...what difference does any of that make?

If they aren't flat plate steel with a simple center bore then how about you answer my question about any further machining to the backside, instead of being an ass.

The "pros" I was referring to, were those that perhaps actually participate in this forum, and in no ways negates that Dinan, and yes, even CarBahn, are "pros", as well.

there is no instance where the plastic cap will retain the spring if the spring itself fails.

You won’t find them posted on the website but I phoned and was able to acquire a set.

I mentioned they should post them as I knew of nearly 10 people that were looking for a set.
