Did BMW ever revise the rod bearing on the S54 motor?
Looking at a car, seller is stating BMW revised the rod bearing in later years and his model year does not suffer from this issue...
I don't recall ever seeing anything like this

No they still have problems in the later years. They did change the material and they have a slight increase but not enough to fix the problem. However the rod bearing don't really have a problem if the car was properly warmed up before pushing the motor. Being used the only way to find out is a black stone analysis and I've heard those don't work on the later years since they changed the material that was used but not 💯 on that
The original rod bearings (088/089) were manufactured from 2007 with several layers, including copper and lead. BMW released an updated rod bearing (702/703) around mid 2010 manufactured from tin & aluminium, coupled with a slight increase in bearing clearance value. |

The rod bearings in the E46 were altered post 03.5 iirc, however, that didn't solve shit. There was also a recall for pre-LCI E46 M3s, so most pre-LCI E46 M3s did have their rod bearings replaced, but often earlier on (pre 20k miles).
In short, no. Do not trust the seller. A lot of sellers say this when selling their E46, but there is no evidence supporting the claim. You might be best off asking the question on E46fanatics, or nam3forum. |

All of the s54 engines are susceptible to rod bearing failure even with revised bearings, if you buy the car keep it in your plans to change them.

What is it with BMW and bad rod bearings. Even the new S58 seems to already have an issue...
