So, if so, I am absolutely sure that your problem is like I had.

I bought used oil filter housing and took off from it the oil thermostat because BMW does not sell oil thermostat separately. I took this oil thermostat and install it to my own oil filter housing. That is solved my problem... After the driving I can't touch the oil radiator because it is really hot!

You can buy new oil filter housing. It contains the new thermostat. As I know it is not so expensive.

This makes me wonder if I should just replace the whole housing when I go after the filter gasket if I’m going to have to do the job over later when that thermostat goes. That Russian page was a good read. Nice work.

epic makes a diverter for the oil filter housing, its supposed to let it run full flow all the time altho the entire housing itself can be found for about $350

Currently putting everything back together after replacing thermostat, coolant temp sensor, fuel breather valve, coolant temp sensor harness, oil pressure switch, oil filter housing gasket and still debating on this VAC oil diverter valve.

Car was reading coolant temps from 83-96C (from secret cluster menu) not pushing, normal daily driving and highway driving with little to no traffic. Oil temps rose and never settled at the middle mark.

Putting in the work! Hope it works out, I'd imagine one of those should be the cause. Also, MS pulley kit would be a cinch to install in that current state BTW.

Do you have a pic of the oil thermostat in the oil filter housing? Sometimes you can see if it's not opening fully, like it's wedged in there.

I know I had one on order but EAS was out of stock and took forever and just cancelled it. Oh well.

Yea I do have a photo. I'll update the thread with the whole install. I actually tried pushing it open and no luck. I thought maybe I'm not squeezing or pushing hard enough because I was able to compress the coolant thermostat. It wasn't wedged, it came out easily but I did notice a crimp in the center of the thermostat. Not sure if that normal.

Anyway I installed the VAC diverter valve and with 75F weather AC on freeway driving mild traffic oil temps stayed below 210. Will report coolant temp from my drove home later on.

I have literally the exact same issue on a 2011 ZCP with 67k miles on it! Everyone tells me I'm crazy and it's nothing but finally someone with the same outlook.

Is your oil cooler still cold after a drive?

Just did a 22 mile drive. About 18 miles highway, no traffic. 2 miles heavy traffic, 2 miles street driving. 62F ambient temp. AC off.

Coolant temps: steady 81-83C Mostly 83C during no traffic, traffic, and street. Also good to note that I used a 50/50 mix of bmw blue coolant with distilled water and some water wetter.

Oil temps: between the 2 and 1 on 210 mark. Dropped and stayed above the 2 once I got on the freeway, also in traffic and just a hair passed the 2 on the street.

Oil cooler: Hot AF.

Conclusion: either the new coolant thermostat fixed it but I'm leaning toward the oil diverter valve. I warm up the car for an extra 5 min in the garage and take the 1 mile route to the freeway entrance vs the .5 mile from my complex. I think it's safe to say I've fixed my unusual oil temp behavior. Will continue to report if anything unusual happens.

Interesting, I didn't think it would go over 210 much with the divert valve during normal driving.

On my drive home, same route, ac also off, with hotter weather 73-77F, the temps went a tiny bit passed 210. This was immediate heavy traffic from the freeway entrance (see photo) after a few miles freeway opened u and temps began to drop again and stabilize. I drove a little more aggressive, hard on throttle and rev matching downshifts to see if it would change but it did not. Since my oil cooler is now circulating oil, seems like the faster I go the better it cools.

Doing an autocross next Sunday, will have better findings then, too.

This is not thermostat, correct?
It is just bypass to direct full oil flow through oil cooler. Correct?

Yes. Not a thermostat. It's a keeps the line open for immediate and continuous oil flow to the cooler.

Finally home, good work, great results! Yep, the faster it goes the cooler it gets.

Haven't taken one apart yet, but why is the diverter valve even needed? Can't you just remove the thermostat part and spring and just close the opening without anything installed, shouldn't that do the same? I guess it probably makes flow less turbulent, if I have one apart some day ill try it.
