Sad day... my baby (E90) is sick. And the doc don't know what's wrong.

Just got word that my E90 with only 880 miles has been "referred to Germany" for further diagnosis. Started it up a couple of days ago and the engine made a loud ticking/clacking that sounded (to me) like excessive valve noise (this is not the normal light ticking that this V8 makes on start up). The noise disappeared after a couple of stabs of the throttle, but given that it came out of nowhere, I brought it in to the dealer. They let the car sit overnight so they could start it cold, and were able to reproduce the noise when they fired it up. They said it hadn't thrown any codes and they hadn't encountered a noise like this before. Sooo... they've referred it to a diagnostic group in Germany that he called "puma" I believe. I will keep you posted.

Also... had a slow leak in the rear tire. Apparently it caught a nail and needed to be replaced. For $513. So anybody debating whether that wheel/tire insurance is a good idea with the 19s should do the math.

Why do I torture myself?

I know that a superhigh performance car like the E90/93 M3 will have issues like the E46 M3 (oil pump, bearings) and the M5 (think SMG) in the first year.

Yet, I cannot resist...I am getting ready to place my order (deposit has been placed).

It is kinda like dating the girl that you know is crazy....but yet...you try to f**k anyway...

Discount tire will pull the nail & patch the tire for free. Never had an issue with any of the high peformance tires I've had patched

They can patch the tire unless the nail is very close to the sidewall. Beats spending $500

My ///M3's rear tires attract nails like bees to honey. Discount tire is a blessing!

They're all crazy....

Just accept it and buy the car anyway, enjoy the ride, and hope it has less problems than others.

Unfortunately it sounds like AJBoston got an extra crazy one.... that sucks

you can get the OEM tires on tirerack.com for just over $300/ea. I guess that doesn't include mounting and balancing, so perhaps it would come out to $500 for a rear...

Ha ha! That's right... I got the crazy one, but I still want to bang her. Will just have to wait for that rash to clear up. Has this analogy gone too far?

costs $20 to mount/balance a tire...not $200.. Costco/Sams Club will order+mount the Michelins far cheaper

Buy the tire from TireRack or Discount and have your dealer mount it. $500 has too much profit and you should call them on it.

How much is this insurance?

Like others said, it can be fixed unless it is in or really close to the sidewall...

Is there any way you can get a sounds clip / video so we know if we hear the same thing? It'd be really great if you could to help us out.

The reason I ask is because I may be hearing the same thing. Unless I'm just being paranoid.

The insurance was $750. Also... it was close to the sidewall in a spot that they couldn't patch. Given that there's no deductible on the tire insurance, and given that the insurance requires the dealer to handle the tires, I sort of don't care what the dealer charges for the tire since it's pass-through cost. But... when the time comes to replace those tires, you can be sure I'll go through a discounter.

Unfortunately BMW still has the car, so I can't really do that. Plus I can only reproduce it if the car sits for 8+ hrs without running.

If I can try to be a little more descriptive, I'd say it sounds like bad valve clatter on an old pushrod V8. It increases in frequency, but not volume, in direct proportion to RPMs. I saw that someone in another thread required a new VANOS module, so I'm wondering if this could be a similar problem.
