Do we have to replace rod bearings after replacing them once?

I replaced my bearings at 55k with WPC coated bearings + ARP fasteners

My car is sitting at 100k now and was wondering if we need to replace these bearings again in the future or just set and forget

WPC ones slightly improve clearance, but then you lose that with the coating.

I assume you'll have to replace them again at some point. I have BE bearings which move us to industry standard clearances and will replace them when I put 100k on them, however, that will take many many years.

Do WPC treated + coating even exist in the market? I know that Calico coating takes up clearance.

I don't think WPC treated + coated bearings exist as an aftermarket offering. It would also be silly to coat on top given what WPC achieves.

WPC is micro shot peening that hardens the surface and leaves a low friction finish. It's pretty impressive. From what I've learned, it doesn't change clearance.

But back to the original question. The prevailing theory at this time is the S65 rod bearings have a too tight clearance from factory. So this doesn't fix the issue as per the current knowledge of the S65 community.

That means it's recommended you should replace them. To get an interval I'd ask someone who pulls S65 bearings daily.

I think the OP mis-stated that WPC was a coating, when it is actually a treatment that might increase clearance by a microscopic amount. Since they don’t increase clearance much, if any, I come up with a replacement interval based on the wear of your first set of bearings. Mine were moderate at 60k miles so I planned on replacing my WPC treated bearings after another 60k miles. Only have 48k on them now.

It would be nice to have a datapoint on your original vs WPC given it is on same engine, same driver, same mileage.

Sorry I think I mean't WPC treated bearings. They are not OEM bearings coated with WPC

Good point you're all making, OP probably meant he had OEM bearings with the WPC treatment (which is not a coating)

But yes, I would be planning on replacing them. Next time replace them for BE bearings and I wouldn't change them for 100k, as they correct the clearance issue the S65 has.
