Maintenance at 600 or 1200?
I've been told the maintenance happens at 1200 miles but my service light is on, and it shows 600 miles for oil...
Anyone know what the answer is? This is regarding the 2008 M3 coupe! Thanks, |

don't be like the guys on that thread, take your car in don't risk any damage, if the light comes on don't just ignore it especially when your covered under warranty!!

My first service "light" came on at 500 miles. My car was BMW India's show car before I bought it, and, while it was not driven by anyone, it was started-up and stopped quite a bit, which is why the service was needed so early.

Make sure the dealer has the filters in before you take it for service. My dealer is not expecting them until next week.. BTW, check over on the "DIY/Servicing/Maintenance" forum for related posts.

If it says 600 miles on the indicator that means you have ANOTHER 600 miles until the service.
That mileage indicator is not telling you what mileage your car should have in order to have service performed it's letting you know how much more you need to drive.

I agree with Monsta, as soon as my light comes on I'm going in for my first service, especially since BMW is paying for it.

These early service intervals may not reflect what's an optimal time to change the tranny and diff fluids, but rather may simply indicate that BMW overestimated the MPG that would occur during break-in (and therefore underestimated how many gallons of fuel would be consumed). In my case the *cumulative* MPG has been: 8.9 MPG after one tank (mostly city) 12.1 MPG after two tanks (2/3 city, 1/3 highway) 14.3 MPG after three tanks (1/2 city, 1/2 highway) Based on the EPA projections my car is nowhere near the efficiency it should have. As I posted in the other thread: If you take it in now, you'll get lubes changed, but not the filter. Second concern I have is - is 800 miles long enough to break in the engine, tranny, and diff? If not, you'll live with contaminated lubes until the next scheduled service, which will be a LONG time, specially for the tranny and diff

Again, no need to take it in. Stop being such worry warts with your cars!
The service indicator shows HOW MANY MORE MILES TO DRIVE UNTIL YOUR SERVICE IS DUE. Not what the mileage on your odometer should read when you need to bring it in. Now, if the indicator actually shows MINUS 600 (-600), then you should bring it in for service. However, there was no indication from the OP that it was at a negative reading.

I took my car in for a Sirius issue and when they put my key fob in the reader it suggested that I get the 1200 mile service........at 614 miles....so I did. Interesting.
