Installing a used Tune?

I have the opportunity to buy a used stage 2 turnermotorsport tune at a killer price. Wondering if I can install it or are they unique to the car when installed. I'm not planning on doin cat delete as I am in Cali. From what I've researched you can still install a stage 2, youbjust won't get the added benefits. Hoping some tech gurus can help shed some clarity if they are unique installs.

Can't use stage 2 unless you have deleted at least the primary cats. Some tunes might be different, but most are purchased for a specific VIN, so you can't just take a cable and download a map that was for another car. The cable is just a cable, the tune itself is a program and that can't just be used on multiple cars, or else tuners wouldn't have a business.

Yeah if it's not with the car, then he's probably just selling you a useless cable. If you want to go stage 1 and have some flexibility on certain map options, just buy an Alpine tune. Nice little stage 1 bump in power and ability to customize some other options.

Not possible, I know who you're talking about too I saw the ad on Craigslist. It's 100% not possible to re-use an e9x m3 tune, the cable is vin locked to the car it was installed on and the tune files are vin specific

Yup been eyeing the Alpine Tune, looks solid bummed I missed that Black Friday deal. Just got exhaust upgraded, intake next then on to the Tune 🤘🏼

Alex Alpine is the way to go, his pricing for tunes is far superior that a lot of the tunes on the market and customer support is top notch

Tangent to the conversation, but I this is an interesting point. Any other mod, you can remove and sell used. Why would/should a tune be different than another mod? Tuners already have the advantage of minimal marginal costs on additional units sold.

That said, the Alpine tune is regularly available for a GB price and is totally worth it.

True think there are some untapped rev streams there. Thought a companion phone app to store various tune settings once installed, would be pretty killer as well.

A (remote OBD-cable) tune is VIN-Locked .

Yes, tunes are typically locked to the ECU. It can be removed and reinstalled only on the same ECU. Can’t be sold to someone else to install on another car once it has been installed. If it has never been installed, it has not been married to a VIN yet and can be resold.
