Looks like there will be no discounts on the HANS III as I've been looking for it as well. However, if you have an American Express card and points linked to Amazon, you can purchase it there for a very slight discount up to $50 or so.

Bimmerworld has the PFC Z54 for ~$3800 which is cheaper than the AP kit even with their discount.

Yea, I just went with the Schroth Evo Hans. Looks the same .
$3800 is too shocking for me at the moment. Maybe in a few more months lol.

Seriously.. I bought do88 PS + engine oil coolers a month ago for about $100 less each item. It was during their "we're moving offices" sale

Is there a reason I couldn't buy a good cooler from summit racing and plum it myself? I am assuming this one is good mainly because of its size. What if I get the same size from a good brand from summit or something like that instead.

Edit: I found this, http://www.bm-parts.com/index.php?ro...&product_id=59, this would allow connection to an aftermarket cooler, something like this maybe: https://www.summitracing.com/parts/bmm-70274/. Same cooling style as the do88 cooler (plate). Hmm.

no, not quite. the plumbing off of the cooler will be a nightmare and you'll have to fab up a custom bracket to get it to sit just right within the ducting. the plastic inlet ducting also fits perfectly to the cooler (do88 has a custom carbon fiber solution) to route air correctly.

same with the oil cooler. complicated aero that is easy to screw up if you try to slap on parts like its an old chevy.

Did you get the radiator and oil cooler? I've read you need both otherwise the stock part gets too hot from not enough airflow.

It's a bracket...doesn't seem that hard. And that adapter I linked would mean you can run an AN line to and from the cooler to the stock lines. So you could technically mount it wherever you want. From what I read the lines running to the cooler and hard line, and then rubber right before the actual cooler.

I'm gonna investigate this, I feel there is a better solution. Even with labor, I bet it would be under 500 for a shop to install my solution, and it can be easily replaced if something happened to it.

Looking at the do88 instructions...its not as strraight-forward as I thought heh.

I already had the CSF radiator so I kept that as-is. In the past I did CSF engine oil cooler and radiator upgrades at the same time

But why? I'm sure you as a custom car builder can attest to finding solutions to things that aren't always just off the shelf parts. Just because someone makes it, doesn't mean it can't be made for less.

I bought an exocage Mr2, with a gen4 3sgte. The best part I am finding is us having to solve problems without just buying something someone else makes. Especially simple coolers and stuff. The d088 is just a fluid cooler.

I could be wrong, and I'd like to be, I just don't see the need for something that small as a transmission cooler to need to be 1000.

As someone who has worked in a shop in the past... no way they’re going to cobble some shit together for less than the do88 cooler. Custom fab takes forever, and the ducting is by far the most critical part. Not to mention that solution adds at minimum double the fluid connections to leak.

I’m not saying $1000 is a good deal, that hurts. But paying a shop to do it is not going to be cheaper. DIY at home where your time doesn’t bill for anything? Sure, you can save some money for sure. And have something that might be equally as effective... if you’re lucky.

how you might interpret what he is saying is- as a custom race car builder that is very familiar with this platform, he found this cooler to be the best solution. if there was something better, he would be using that. some of the builds he has a part in have a generous budget for creative parts and this is still his recommendation.

i have a b&m pressed cooler on my rock crawler. they are great, but its bulky and rough. this is not the right application for them.

Bulky and rough. Are those the only downsides?

besides the downsides i already stated, i guess.

take a look at the delicate placement of ducting and constraints. if you feel like you can do a better job, please do.

I don't think something like a do88 DCT cooler is an "off the shelf" solution.....You ain't going down to Pep Boys or O'Reilly and finding a do88 cooler sitting next to the fuzzy steering wheel covers. If anything, it's a highly specific part designed for only one car with a specific transmission. And it's well thought out.

Is it the best possible solution? Who knows. I can tell you with empirical data that it functions a fair amount better (around 25ºF) than the stock unit because I took the time to hook up two temp gauges and measure stock performance and measure do88 performance. The results were good enough for me.

And that's what it boils down to----is it good enough for you at the price point? If not, then go out and design one that's better and perhaps more cost effective. I get the sense you're itching to do it. So do it! You will have an audience here eager to hear your results.

Good point.

I make my own stuff because it's fun. Actually, I end up spending more in some cases when DIYing something because you miss something.

It takes awhile to get the experience and know how to make something better at a lower cost. You're already starting off at a high point when compared to OE.

I haven't delved deeply into it yet, but I think cooling in an E9X is going to be very challenging. For one, you have very limited openings for fresh air flow.

From what I’ve seen, a dry sump system is the only thing that truly prevents overheating in an S65.

I’ve seen aftermarket coolers——nope. I’ve seen additional coolers added——nope. It’s a really tough problem—especially when you add go-fast parts.

If you’ve got an angle on how to combat the heat without going to dry-sump crazy town, I’d love to see what you come up with.

Oil temp is partially an aero problem imo - there is plenty of oil and the pumps move plenty of it but you’re dumping the air under the car where it doesn’t really want to go. All the cooler in the word wont matter if air isn’t passing over it any faster. It’s a similar problem to what the C5 vette has - all the cooling air has to go through a few places and as soon as you add front aero those are compromised - check out latest GRM issue for what I’m talking about

Also, the GT4 Uses a different pump with a metal impeller and different impeller design. If the coolant is cavitating in the pump housing at constant high rpm, and therefore not flowing as efficiently as it could, the oil has to take up the slack. I don’t think I have seen back to back track engine temp management data between those two pumps oem/gt4 on here, would be worth a look imo
