I'm not 100% sure actually. I'm not loving the sound paired with my Frequency Intelligent exhaust. It's plenty loud but it changed the sound of the exhaust a lot from when I had the full catless system. If it is any consolation, I'm on my 4th mid/xpipe pairing this exhaust. (I just took out the AFE yesterday and a catless/resonated Faspeed - definitely not like the new set up either) lol. It might just be the exhaust at this point but I love the exhaust because it's valved and has pretty cf tips. I also have the exhaust for sale here, but I might keep it who knows? Here's the FI for sale thread where I detailed a bit of this dilemma: https://www.m3post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1573064

Your reasons are valid.
I currently have Remus Race on the stock cat pipes and I have a couple of things I'd like to work on. The system could be quite a bit louder and still not bother me, but I don't want a farty, two-dimensional sound like the ATAK, or a brassy note like the Meisterschaft or many of the other exhaust vids I've sat through. I've also got a bit of a hum at 3k with the windows up, with a secondary harmonic at 2k.
That means I need to mess with the pipes. Lots of options ranging from doing primary test pipes (a dozen companies) to doing primary resonators (Rogue) to doing a complete x pipe replacement. I'd like to keep some cats in there and go to a siamese x, hence the aFe. I know there are others, and that there a few that play with the x location, which intrigues me, but I'd start with the aFe.

I'm not averse to playing around with a wide variety of setups. On my E46 M3s I went from stock to Borla mufflers (groce) to Remus to AA, and played with Eisenmann and Racing Dynamics sections before settling on what sounded best for the car.

Think about it and if you decide to cut it loose get in touch with me. I'm in no hurry.

I'll keep you posted. Btw If you looking for substantial amount of "louder" sound skip the test pipes. I've tried them, turner in my case, it only sounds a little louder than stock xpipe imo.

I'm not in search of loud, really. I meant to say that the volume of my current setup was still deep in "comfortable" volume territory. It could go quite a bit higher before it would bother me, but I'm not necessarily looking for that.

I'm going to play around with a few pipe setups and maybe try some of the mufflers that have a lesser following: Borla S-Type, Milltek, AE, Boat, etc. At some point I could see having half a dozen different boxes on the shelf to try depending on my mood. That'll require a lift, which I'll be getting in March-April; between the drop and the carbon fiber bits I don't want to try floor-jacking the car up every weekend or attempting ramps. I need the lift for maintenance anyway so easier exhaust changes will be a great bonus.
