Borla Atak exhaust for E90

I have heard a lot of aftermarket exhausts on E9x M3s. But the Borla Atak is the one. All my other immediate mod plans have been put on hold, because I want to buy this like... right now. The only issue I see is that they don't make one specifically for the E90. Am I missing something? I could easily cut and weld to adapt the way the tips stick out, but I was hoping there was a more out the box option. I hope this all makes sense, all input is helpful. Thanks!

I ordered the Atak with the E90 part number. Turned out it didn't fit very well, pipes went out too far. Sold it to an E92 guy, didn't quite fit there either, pipes a tad short.
I also tryed Borlas Sport. Again ordered for E90, perfect fit.

FWIW a quick review: https://www.m3post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1457106

the connection point at the x-pipe i's adjustable, and it perfectly fits the E90. I've had it on my car for 6 months now, no issues.

Holy shit. That thread is perfect, thank you. One of the first mods I did to the car after I bought it was the OEM exhaust mod. It was great for a while, I loved it! And, as you mentioned in your thread, for the $$ - the OEM exhaust mod cannot be beat. For the last month or so though, I have been wanting something more. When I heard the Atak in person, I fell for it, fully. I'm going to go for it. If I'm not 100% happy with the way the tips stick out, I feel like that could be easily modified.

Thank you for your input! It was spot on!

That is good to know, thanks buddy! I'm going to be one happy girl once I get this exhaust on my car

Fubar seems to have been more lucky than me. I pushed the pipes so they almost broke...still sticking out too much. Double checked with Borla, nope should be correct. Again the Sport fitted perfect so Borla clearly know how they should fit. The Atak I received had a few other welding flaws though so might been a bad ex.

I even went to an exhaust shop and reviewed a mod (shortening but also swap end pipes which didnt fit my taste). Bit of work to get it right though so skipped that idea.

The song coming out it great though!

This is what did me in lol. The sound was intoxicating. In my mind I was like -- just take my damn money already!! Then I found out how relatively inexpensive the Atak was, and I was even more pleased.

I really appreciate the solid info you have given me here, as well as on the thread of yours. I'm going to give Borla a call on Monday before I buy the Atak. I would have anyways, I always call a manufacturer or supplier and talk a little bit about what I want to purchase before I actually pull the trigger. At least for larger ticket items. I'm also going to look around for sound clips of the Sport so I can try and get an idea of what it sounds like compared to the Atak.

Thanks Helmsman! Your input is always appreciated

If the Atak is what you heard and like you don't want the Sport mate. Trust me, its VERY bassy and don't produce any of the Ataks tunes. It is meant to be though, apparenty that goes well on the Mustang which apparently is a big market for Borla. Doesn't fly at all with the S65 though.

Good luck!

Okay, cool. That's good to know. I'm going to stick with what I heard and liked, and I really liked the Atak. I'll be looking into it more tomorrow. Thank you, again

ATAK is life. The best exhaust for the S65! ( my opinion)

The sound was just too damn sexy lol. All my car mod research has derailed completely and I have been looking into exhausts in all my spare time now. The only question I have now is this -- there's no way the ATAK is too loud for tracks that have decibel restrictions, right? This would be the only bit of research I still need to look into so that I'm not screwing myself over at the track lol. I want LOUD, but I have to consider many factors... I guess

with a catless xpipe it's pretty loud. I havent been to a track with sound restrictions yet, but I've been told on multiple occasions my car would be ok.

Bringing it back from the dead!

Hope you've been well, Mary. I'm pretty sure it was my Jet Black E90 with Atak that you're referencing here

Curious where you landed with this. I'm bringing it back from the dead because I wouldn't mind getting Atak for my new E90M, but am only able to find E92/E93. Nothing for E90. Anyone aware of its availability?

Hey Tyler! Yeah just chuggin’ along, hope you’re doing well too! I dug up this old picture, I believe this was the night I fell in love with the ATAK on your old car lol 😁

The one I picked up used was off an E92. The tips were excessively large and long however, so I ended up picking some customs tips and then we shortened the length of the pipes coming out of the muffler, if I remember correctly. It’s been a while. One of the guys at my husband’s shop, who does most of their welding and a lot of their fabricating, did it for me. He did a really good job and I have been happy ever since.

So happy that you got another E90 M3!! Congrats man! 👏👏

That's the night! I remember we all grabbed dinner. If I remember the timing, that was just a few days before that distracted girl totaled my old Jet Black E90, so that's likely the last picture of it in one piece Where's FuzzyPeaches these days?? That looks like his in the back there.

New one is effectively the same spec - low/no option car, cloth interior, manual, no nav, slicktop - just in Le Mans Blue this time.

I may have to see about what your buddy can do to do the same for mine. I'm still sold on the Atak after all these years, just can only find E92-spec. I always disliked the tips on the one I had as it is anyway.

Glad you've been well! We'll have to get a group together some time soon. I'm closer to you now that I've moved into North Georgia. Greenville is maybe an hour and a half from home base.

Beautiful car!! 😍 Wow! What a spec!

If you still have the same number I can shoot you a text so it’s easier to get in touch if you want to talk more about the custom exhaust thing. I can send you some pics of how mine turned out too.

FuzzyPeaches is still in ATL mostly. I wish I could see him more often! I don’t make it down there as often as I used to. But we last caught up at Petit LeMans a couple months back.

Hi Mary, see you rarely these days thought you might have left us, good to see the garage still holds the E90.... Also see there is a E28 535iS...wow. Quite the dream when I was young (even a 528i would have done it). Didn't even know there was an iS version. Curious is that the 215bhp or 185 motor you got over there?

Hi Helmsman! My E90 M3 will always have a space in the garage 😁 Even though we usually have way more cars than home garage space lol…

We actually sold the 535iS last year because a whole year had gone by without us driving it. We had it stored at a client/friend’s garage so it was easy to forget to exercise it. We did love it very much though, was an absolute blast to drive and had a timeless beauty to it, it was just time to pass it on to someone who would enjoy it more.

The 535iS was only available in the US market. It was only made for a couple of years, and was the model right below the M5 in the US while it was in production. The hp was in the 180/182 range I believe. This particular one we had we picked up from a friend who had cared for it well. It was so pretty 😍

I have had a few people reach out for more details about how we modified the tips. I will put all the info I have here so anyone can easily access it. You're welcome to reach out if you have further questions, but I am not on here much so I will do my best to respond in a timely manner

These first three pictures show the end result from when we modified the tips back in 2019. I wanted something really simple, which may not be everyone's taste. The instructions I include later in the post have exact specs and a part number for this result. I feel like a customized outcome could easily be created with the measurements and instructions as well.

This next picture I took in 2025 from the underside to show a better angle of the junction and welds.

Finally, here is a diagram our fabricator made that shows detailed instructions on how he modified the tips.

Name: E92 Borla exhaust tip mod.jpg
Views: 62

I am super happy still to this day with the results. I absolutely LOVE the sound of the ATAK on this car, even after almost 7 years. The factory Borla tips were a deal breaker for me though, especially with how they sit on the E90. Modifying the tips was essential. I hope this helps anyone else who is facing the same issue
