Power Coat Color Suggestions for OEM 359 Comp Wheels?
Looking into powder coating my OEM 359 wheels from the stock silver to something different. I drive a Frozen Grey M3 and after looking on the forums found that its very common to black out the wheels. The contrast looks great and it helps the maintenance since these cars produce so much brake dust. I like the look, however I do think that the dark color takes a bit of the detail which makes the wheels really stand out. What do you guys think?
Are there any color examples aside from loud colors like red or yellow which would go well with the grey paint job? Any suggestions I should look into or examples you know of? ![]() Or should I just refinish them (minor curb rash) and put on some ceramic coating like Opticoat to help with the dust? |

I saw a pic of a sedan with "umber gray" ZCP wheels. Looks very nice to me, at least in the pics. Here's the link to the google image.

Coat em. Silver pops on darker colors. I think making them black causes the car to look like it's on 4 blacks holes with black tires and black calipers.

Wow, I really like the anthracite on the above car!
The previous owner of my car must have done Hyper Black or something to my wheels, they look like black chrome to me. That's an option also. [IMG] IMG_9176 by [/IMG] [IMG] IMG_8437 by [/IMG]

I love black wheels but not 'matte' black - they must be satin or better yet, full gloss.
If not black, then I agree with a dark/medium titanium look. The problem with some anthracites/charcoals/gunmetals is that they lack depth so choose wisely. You want a color that 'pops' in the direct sun AND doesn't fade to a grey blob in the shadows. For this you need a high quality finish with a bit of flake in it - ideally a multi-stage coating - typical single stage/run of the mill powder coating can look somewhat boring depending on color. My least favorite color for the ZCP wheels is the OE finish - too bright. But for a silver/grey/white car? Black all day err day. The contrast is key. And for the love of god please do not put matte wheels on a matte car. |

i wasn't sure what the grey wheels on grey car would look but those aren't bad.
How about the hyper back or anthracite with some bronze flake or hue? no example that I can find, but something different. Or even a dark bronze altogether. I've seen it with other the wheels on grey paint, just not the style 359 |

Stock ZCP E46/E92 are the best looking factory wheels for the street to come out of BMW's design team ever IMO; that's the only thing holding me back when considering a powder coat.

i almost think about having mine powder coated every single season but still haven't done it...
always have the worry that the high temp will weaken the wheel to some degree and if i occasionally track it i shouldn't do it, just to be on the safe side? anyone powercoated theirs and constantly track on them? |
