How to properly Dyno a ESS S/C E9X M3 Mustang Dyno

Hi guys,

I did a search and did not find what I am looking for so I am hoping you guys can help. I am looking to see if someone can tell me where the Dyno operator should be getting a RPM signal from?

I had my car dynoed last year and the operator was not too familiar with BMW's in general so I was not sure I was getting the proper results as they dyno was cutting off at less than 8000rpm.

I am also ESS supercharged, where should the boost line be hooked up?

Being 6 speed manual, what gear should be used to dyno these cars?

TIA

I gotcha homie, just went through this on the dyno. Took us over 30mins to figure it out.

Take the passenger side spark plug cover off. On the easiest spark plug boot to get to, pull back the shielding a little from the spark plug boot. Clamp the white wire. That should get you an RPM signal.

As far as the boost reference, I have no clue.

I asked Regular Guy, the person responsible for the dyno database, and this is what he responded:

Make sure to capture RPM (attach to spark wires on passenger side, #1 cylinder), use 4th gear, and capture boost on the dyno if you can.

this was for a dct car, so the 6 spd may vary.
I would request the operator to give you as much information as possible and the electronic files as well as the printed out report.

on the bypass valve vacuum line, tap into there for boost reading.

This should work well, but as a rule of thumb, you always want to meter boost as close to the intake plenum/manifold as possible to get the most accurate and real-time readings.... Considering that pressure at the plenum is where it matters most. This will also help rule out any potential boost leaks, because you'll be reading what the pressure at the plenum is (right before it enters the engine) vs. taking it from some random vacuum line that could have cracks/leaks or something of that nature. BUT, boost leak check your system before hopping on a dyno to make big numbers!

i have a vf supercharger thats 6 speed. i dyno using the ignition wire method mentioned above off cylinder one. i hook a boost gauge reader off my BPV. they use a T fitting for it. unfortunately i didnt take any pictures of it but everytime i do it that way it always reads good.

the bypass valve is connected to the plenum. the random vacuum line is part of the install to operate the bypass valve. i've seen some guys tap into the back of the manifold, I just didn't want to drill into the manifold. i've also seen the awron velocity stack with a tap for a line, or some people modify the stock velocity stacks but I didin't want to go that route either. i stuck to the ESS install instructions.

trap the car down.
lift the cover off the passnager side coil pack cover use the large signal clamp on the dyno and put it around all 3 wires going in to coil pack 1
start the car let it roll with traction off on the down in 2nd gear for 5 seconds. COme to a stop car should go in to dyno mode on it's own.

Do your pull in 5th.

I spoke to the guys at the dyno and they are saying they will have me drive at a set rpm on the dyno and the dyno can be set that way? Seems kind of unscientific to me oppose to getting a signal from the #1 coil wires.

It is $50 for a few pulls so I can see them wanting to do it hassle free. I am just looking for baseline numbers prior to some upgrades so I am not sure if it really matters...
