I didn't do the swap so I didn't do a magnet check, makes sense, but I ask due to ignorance; what ferrous metal could be ground or shaved inside the engine? Rings? Bolts? I'll ask the mech if he checked.
So everything got cleaned and thrown away, wished I had your foresight.

Had rod bearings done last week. My car is a 2013 E92. Car was at 45,704 miles. I don't track and on a scale of 1-10 of how often I go on "spirited drives", I would say I'm at a 4. I wait for cold start cycle to finish before driving with low load on the engine (below 3k RPM). Oil changes is always done with Castrol TWS 10w-60 or the BMW branded Castrol, every 6k miles.

The shop I went to has done plenty of these bearing replacements, the tech said these aren't that bad, they have seen worse and they have seen better.

Following up my earlier bearing pic post. More detailed pics and black stone.

To recap. 08 e90. 43,000 mi. Oci about 5000 to 7500.

1 track day at Laguna on last oci going at beginner speeds.

Sad that my lead went up to 18 this time right before the bearing change. Ended up going with BE with BE bolts and doing the bimmerworld dipstick while the oil pan is out (tricky to get installed correctly but it’s good now) New motor mounts made a surprising difference in drivability even on a gently driven 43k mile car. Driving in stop and go traffic is no longer the pain it was before.

Copper shows at some of the bearing ends. Is this common?

Probably not because many of us have changed our rod bearings and found no particles on the screen.

Heres mine - 2009 E90, 29k miles.

I am the second owner, regular oil changes (longest interval is 7k), previously not really driven in winter with minimal short journeys, car always treated with mechanical sympathy and warmed up correctly. Previous owner was a more mature gentleman who didn't really push the car at all. Anecdotal but despite their easy life still showing some wear.

That is beyond impressive. Start to finish for me was about 20 hours, also on jack stands.

Here's mine. 2008 87.8k miles. I'm the 3rd owner, have had the car a little over a year. I've tracked it 3 weekends in the past year, previous owner babied it, not sure about 1st owner. I've done 2 blackstones reports, first one right after I bought the car came back great, the second one at 84.5k spiked a little on lead (went from 4 to 10) over 4k miles. Did the replacement by myself in my garage, took around 12-13 hours of actual work time over the course of Superbowl weekend. Took advantage of having the oil pan off to re-tap one of the drain holes was a bit sticky. Also replaced motor mounts - not sure if they had been replaced before, they had some cracking and a little rust, but still seemed structurally ok for the most part. Regarding the bearing wear, it was really consistent across all cylinders, the tops all showing the most wear (interesting alternating wear patterns). There was also some copper showing on the tops right at the parting line. I went with BE bearings and the BE/ARP rod bolts, plastiguaged everything, clearances were very consistent.

They really don't look terrible for the year and mileage.

The mounts start to collapse. Stand a new one up next to an old one and you may see a 1/4 inch height difference.

If you actually do want to lower the motor, I think the rogue mounts are about 1/4 inch lower. Still plenty of clearance. I tried a set. Unfortunately they cause vibration at idle because they are a little stiffer. If you raised the idle speed in the tune from 550 to 850, I think it would go away but I have yet to see anyone get a tuner to raise the idle speed (I have done this on other cars to smooth out LTW flywheel rattle, dampen stiffer motor mounts, reduce Vortech supercharger noise, etc).

I think the DNC funded the rod bearing investigation.

That's exactly what I'm going to tell the buyer of my car too. Exactly what you want to hear and you'll believe it b/c of my dashing silver speckled hair (that's what my new job has done for me...).
