I think this shows the effect far clearer. This graph is of all failures except supercharged cars.
The X axis is stated year of manufacturer, oldest at zero (ordered by date of fail).
There was the bearing spec change to EU mandated lead free bearing at around mid 2010 most likely for the 2011 model change in August 2010.
Assuming all cars with a stated build date of 2011 have the new bearings then the change occurs on the graph with car 26.

I think its obvious that the bearing change had a significant effect on the mileage at which cars failed. The new 2011 bearings originally measured up with a slightly larger clearance than the old bearings which is somewhat surprising given the result.

My hope is that time will show that once these motors get past x0,000 miles, the probability of bearing failure goes way down. In my mind, this would point to assembly error, not a design error, a wrong oil spec, or weakness in the part itself.

The more engines we see running well past 100k (and 200k), I think the more confident that we can all be that this is a isolated problem, not a sure-to-fail-with-time issue.

My Blackstone report at 77k was nice and clean. Would still love to see the bearings out of the 260k E90 that just changed hands!

I recently purchased a 2008 M3 6MT with 75k on the clock. I'm unsure of the previous maintenance... I'm torn between fixing it now or purchasing a 3rd part warranty.

Just for reference.....purchased an 08 with 81K in July. Immediately did rod bearings. One of them was down to copper; other 7 looked OK.

In the long run doing the bearings is cheap insurance, and after you do it you can beat it like it owes you money and it will come back for more

I didn't think that way till I had my bearings done. I had 145K plus miles and my bearings were worn through 3 layers. I was informed that I was lucky and a kaboom was likely in the near future. I had no signs of issue. So why did I do it? I got a complimentary black stone analysis and the results was high lead detection (around 26 ppm).
