I'm about to purchase a 2013 E92 M3 in a couple of days, 36k miles. This thread has me a little scared, indy shop check came out ok (mechanic knew about bearings issue but said this one was fine) and the car is still under factory warranty until June 2017 (not CPO). I'm thinking maybe use it until next year then drop the 2.5k to do the bearing update once I'm out of warranty? really don't know. I currently have an 07 335i e92, car has been great.

jcolley reported that a couple of S85 with wpc treated stock bearings had issues. There may be another report or two of issues with treated or aftermarket bearings on S65, but as I recall the results were either inconclusive or there was a misdiagnosis.
In my view, replacing the bearings is the smart thing to do if you do not have a warranty. I would not want to spend $10k changing a motor and that is with me doing all the work and buying a used motor. But if you are a gambler, it is undeniable that most E9xM3 are driving around just fine on their original rod bearings. The odds are with you. |

The only failure I've seen here of aftermarket bearings came with wpc bearings on a supercharged car. At one point I thought my VAC's had given up but upon pulling them they turned out perfect.

That was just my conclusion from reading about 5 pages back, sorry. But mine is at 84k now with no abnormal ticking, 10w60 every 5k. My e46 m3 had 182k miles when I sold it and I rev'd that to redline more than twice a day everyday. I wasn't as involved or aware of the rod bearing issue back then so had no idea anything could go wrong. I think I'll just continue driving and hope nothing happens. I think these cars are built well and just that small percentage had an issue. I'll just go by the numbers & pray.

Just ordered the BE bearings for my 2008 M3 w/ 80k and no current issues. It's my DD now, I will turn it into a weekend ride/track car in the future and want it to last a while. Spoke to a local Euro tuning shop - I'll be taking the parts myself ~ $700 and the labor for swap + oil change/filter/pan (need one during swap) will be $1000 total + 2 days in the shop.

Well, add me to the list. What a downer. I drove the car to Kentucky/Tennessee from Toronto, and lost the engine last night. Just totally blew up, sent holes through the block. And before I left, I was thinking, maybe I should get the bearings done. Dealer says a complete new short block is required. $33k.
The car is modified with an ESS S/C, but the car has been babied and never tracked. 65,000kms. Pretty lousy day. Any advice?
