2017 Ford Escape
A friend sells Fords and he talked me into trying out a new Escape. I asked which motor was in it and he said, "Just try it and give me your opinion - I'll tell you what's in it after the test drive."
What the heck, why not? Fired it up and was surprised how quiet and smooth it was (this is a GDI engine that DOESN'T sound like there's something wrong with it). Anyway, off for a joy ride. The thing had good overall performance and the sync technology is really nice IMO. If you want to listen to Sinatra, Prime Country, Fox Business, etc., just say the name unlike the BMW which makes you remember the satellite station number and further requires you to say it just the way "they" want you to say it. Did I mention it was quiet? Oh, and it comes with a spare tire - I didn't ask about a dipstick. Test drive complete and the moment of truth arrived - I was driving the 1.5 litre ecoboost NOT the 2.0 ecoboost. Based of the response it provided, I would have bet it was the 245 HP 2.0 litre. Learn something new everyday. Is it a BMW? No, but it is a VERY serviceable vehicle, particularly for the money. |

As a guy who has always had a Ford as one of my vehicles (Mustang) I always felt like Ford made decent cars, especially there engines but the build quality is not on the same level as BMW. Fords usually have to much plastic on the interior.

We were thinking about getting one of these for our au pair to shuttle the kids around. Good to hear you enjoyed it. I might have to give it a whirl!

I recently test drove a 2017 Escape 1.5L and like you I thought it felt powerful enough that it could have passed for the 2.0L had I not known differently. We are in the market for a replacement for our Jetta SW TDI once we complete the buyback process and the Escape 2.0L is definitely on the short list. Hard to beat the value. The only other small SUV I'd consider would be the new Kia Sportage 2.0 turbo which my mom-in-law owns in non-turbo form and I also think has great value. Being in SE MI though, I would tend to give give the nod to the Escape if for no other reason than it will cut down on hostility from other drivers.
I will go test drive an X1 28i at some point too, but I am near certain we won't be paying the BMW tax for a non-high-performance vehicle. If BMW were to release the 35i model in the next few months, then that would a more exciting proposition but I don't think we can expect that until late next year at the earliest. FWIW the Subaru Outback H6 is also under consideration. A little pricey but a fantastic package overall. And of course, we'll also be offering to buy a Golf Alltrack at invoice price if VW would like to keep us as a customer. |

Ford hatchback? Focus or bust IMO.
Yes, I called the Escape a hatchback. It used to be a SUV but I really don't know what the hell it is anymore. "Crossovers" are a scourge.

+1. I have a Focus Hatch 1.0 EcoBoost - Manual. International Engine of the Year 3x. I've broken 50 MPG a few times. Great engine, very good, inexpensive daily driver.
