He is saying the newer 20011-2013 Alum bearings, not the older Lead bearings the 2007-2010 M's have.

My car is a 2008. This is the first time the bearings have been changed. 147800 miles. Now I have WPC bearings and new stock bolts.

That's the trick isn't it? Does it mean cutting bait and pointing at installer error if there's a problem (pretty much every shingle manufacturer, for instance) or replacing the whole phone even if it was clearly dropped in a turd-filled toilet against warranty terms (Apple, sometimes)? Service after the sale is a risk every consumer takes.

Congrats on getting them done. I'm definitely getting something with copper/lead.

His bearings look fantastic for a 2008 with almost 150k miles? I'm always confused by these threads - some pics look straight up terrible to me, but are lauded as not bad, and then stuff that looks good to me (comparatively) is claimed horrible.

He thought they were the aluminum bearings which don't show wear hardly at all....so for them to look like this would be bad, but for lead bearings, these seem fine to me as well. Mine with 60k on them looked a hundred times worse.

Agreed..when I look at pictures per Clevite and some other sites, I don't know how some reach their conclusions with what should be fairly objective criteria....it either looks like something or it doesn't. To me, the bearing above looked pretty good given the mileage.

I thought he had a 2011. They look good for a 2008. Not perfect but pretty good.
The "newer" bearings don't show wear like the earlier bearings do.

Contrary to anything rumored here, there have been no failures due to BE Bearings. The car in question had a main bearing failure. BE Bearings does not make main bearings.

Unbelievable. Truly unbelievable. You think manufactures of a highly engineered and critical component, more at the heart of and engine than perhaps any other part, should be having paying customers be beta testers? On top of that, they can make claims that are truly marketing claims with no scientific basis and that's just peachy with you? You can't be serious.
You sir are unbelievable. You were quiet on the forums for quite a while, but you were watching closely and as soon as you thought that there was an engine failure with BE Bearings you came out hard and fast with your same old nonsense.

Just to clear things up a bit, there were many people involved in coming up with the BE Bearings final design, some of which are the most respected and qualified people in the industry. You make it sound like a couple of idiots came up with the bearing design out of thin air and then had them made.

Well as usual you won't give credit where credit is due, at least there is an alternative bearing design available now and all of us involved are undertaking real world testing and documenting it for all to see. There will be so much information available once the testing is done it will take months to go over it all. You can keep up your antics if you like, but once all the chips have fallen, you sir won't get the last laugh, we will.

By the way, what BMW gave us was a bearing in beta, no different than the BE Bearings...... The only thing about the OEM bearings is that they are proven, proven to fail!

When do the BE Bearings main bearings come out? Seems like an opportunity.

I'm a newb in the M world, but have been driving base 3 and 5 series in the past and have never had an engine "spin, or break" anything, lol. I'm just trying to understand this bearing issue better and looking to see if it's worthwhile changing bearings or just waiting until and IF the motor fails and just replace the entire motor for one that has a "better chance" of having been assembled properly. Running motors are becoming available at $7-9K recently. Bearing replacements are $3,000 locally for me, and warranties ive had quoted are $4,000 are only up to 4 years (what if nothing happens in 4 years?)

Is there any discussion on possible manufacturing defects in the M3 forums? I've already read the threads on clearance issues, but I just don't believe this is the final answer....there are too many fine-running engines out there for this to be it, just my opinion for now.

I had my first Blackstone report come back a little high on lead (19) but that's just one report and may be a particle streak...i'll do another one soon.

Not looking for a peace of mind answer, I just want to have a plan.

Thanks !

GM

I don't know if it's worth doing preventatively with stock bearings (since they seem to fail at lottery based intervals rather than in some specific interval), but if your lead stays high I'd replace them for sure... and until the next analysis I'd routinely listen to that engine very carefully.

you can have your opinion, but we have a lot more to go on than opinions. The information is here for you to make your own decision. I certainly made mine.
