Yup...like I said its expensive and so was the CF roof I had installed, the Akra exhaust and other bits. Dollar per weight it's unbeatable though

I know in cars that don't regulate current when the battery is full can kill your AGM battery on long drives. Not sure if that's the case with BMWs though.

Hi Tom, with so many different sizes/specs thought I'd clarify.

This particular one (Duralast H8-AGM) is what the stock one calls for:

Width is less and therefore you save 13lbs. Then to have it reprogrammed.

I would recommend the BMW branded battery, never had much luck with Autozone brands.

It weighs less than 10lbs and puts out 1,000 pulse amps due to it being Lithium iron phosphate (not to be confused with Ion). It also includes a BMS to protect the battery from over/under charging. It'll sit longer than any other battery type on the market now and retain a charge due to it having a slower rate of capacity loss. It takes a year to lose 10%, which is amazing.

The Mini battery weighs even less at 38lbs. Part # 61217591080. Should be around $200.

Thanks. That part is no longer available. Plus our cars use AGM battery, checked for 2013 Cooper S and the part no is the same as for the Z4M (H6-AGM) anything I am missing?

You just need to have the vehicle re-programmed to use the mini battery. Even the dealer can do it.

So sounds like we can buy a z4m battery from the dealer parts dept and swap it with the 60lb battery. Is coding a diy project?

Depends on your comfort level and expertise. A number of forum members have registered their own batteries.

Sounds like I should probably work with a pro. I doubt my dealer would install a z4 battery in my m3. So need to figure out who will.
I am almost dumb enough to buy the voltphreaks - but $1000 is just too much $. And there is no retaining system - so you have to fab one somehow. My car is a summer car so the battery tender is always at the ready.
I do think taking weight out of these cars is noticeable. My winter car is an 4 cyl accord manual transmission and I can feel the difference between a full tank and 1/4 tank of gas.

IMHO: Z4M battery is great for daily drivers, we ran them in our shop vehicles for years without issues.

Not yet, I'm in the middle of doing my rod bearings.

I'm sure it will be fine, other than having to recode the car to the lowest setting (this battery is like 12Ah) it's rated slightly higher than the OEM AGM battery that's in the car now.

This battery seems to be in a sweet spot for price/weight/performance. $424 at 8 pounds and it powers everything fine. And it loses it charge very slowly---meaning it can sit in a trailer for several weeks…..seems pretty cool. $420 to shed 20 extra pounds (from my MiniCooper battery, and around 51 pounds from the stock battery) is a pretty economical way to lose weight.

I'm curious to see how the Pegasus LiFePO4 BMS battery works out over time. Will your car be a daily driver or for track only? When I change my battery out it will either be this one or the standard Z4M/Mini battery replacement.

I ran the Shorai LiFePO4 in my previous Subaru STI, and it was only 5 lbs. which was a huge amount of weight savings over the stock battery. The weight savings was noticeable because the battery sits in the very front portion of the car (horrible setup). It was solid and never had any issues, but that car is not as battery intensive as the M3's.
