3200 rpm drone with M Performance exhaust

I purchased a used MPE on this forum, and noticed it had a drone at about 3200 to 3600 rpm as well. I saw some other saying that they heard it too. Doesn't bother me too much. No cracks in mine. I thought it was a characteristic of this exhaust.

I went back to the oem. I don't think the sound of a loud muffler appeals to me in retrospect. Especially if it takes away from the engine. But if that mpe didn't drone it would have been my choice. I would like to ride in the car of an axel back akra but it would have to have my diff to be true apples to apples but I think that's quieter than the mpe. I'm not exactly looking for quieter. Just less drone.

I had the Dinan exhaust and it didn't drone, it was super quiet on the freeway and when you stepped on it the sound was excellent

Crazy how an OEM exhaust could have so many failures. I spent 700 on Megan and test pipes and absolutely love it. Come to think of it, I haven't heard a bad sounding exhaust on these cars except for ACM mod with test pipes (too much rasp).

MPE + catless + BPM Stage II tune = Exotic. Loving it every time I drive. Complements every time I drive. Can't get enough

Catless + OEM exhaust= the worst sound I've ever heard on the M3. My buddy did this and it made his car sound so cheap. Nothing but unpleasant rasp. He agreed and couldn't add the cats back on quick enough. Have you tried this?

It still think about how I drove around like that.

I had my 1st-gen MPE replaced recently and the new 2nd-gen version (with stress-relief holes/valves) is awesome. I got it replaced under warranty due to cracks on the muffler (see http://www.m3post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=897377), but the 2nd-gen fixes the drone issue too.

Got the original installed at McKenna BMW when I leased my new 2013 E92 M3. They did a piss-p00r job on the install (metal cable on the driver's side of the muffler not connected and, therefore, hanging straight to the ground, etc). And when I noticed the irritating drone (between 3200 to 3800 rpm, in high gears) right away, I naturally assumed it was due to shotty install job. But, long story short, the original design have this drone (I think most people aren't tuned to this drone) and, as many on the 'MPE crack' thread will attest, are susceptible to cracks.

I said the original design all have this drone because, when another dealer recently replaced the original MPE with a new one, they installed another one of the original design. That one droned the same. So, at my insistence (this warranty replacement was done thru BMWNA), this dealer replaced it again by searching for and finding an MPE with new design (that 'MPE crack' thread helped in identifying the new design) and, lo and behold, zero drone. After over 2 years, I'm finally a happy camper with MPE situation (no thanks to McKenna BMW). I had a 2008 E90 M3 w/ stock exhaust and 2011 E90 M3 w/ stock exhaust and the exhaust noise on those stock exhaust increase very linearly and, after being used to those, the drone on the 2013 E92 M3 with the MPE was immediately and persistently noticeable.

Interestingly, the 1st and 2nd gen MPE's have the exact part number, so the only way for a warehouse to know which is which is to open up the cardboard boxes and visually inspect. (EDIT: this info was told to me from the dealer's parts people. Since then, other m3post forum members have stated that the gen2 MPE has either an updated p/n or has "-02" appended to the p/n.)

Am very sensitive to drone which is why I installed the MPE Exhaust instead of one of the aftermarket systems (virtually all of them drone in the 2500 - 3000 RPM range or are so loud that you can't stand riding in the car for any period of time).

Mine is the Gen II system and I have not experienced any drone to speak of at any RPM.

I've had both Gen 1 and Gen 2 MPE's. They both sound identical to me, neither of mine had any "irritating drone" and I'm super sensitive to it also. The only thing I can tell that is different are the stress relief holes on the Gen 2. I didn't develop any cracks on my Gen 1 luckily. Awesome sounding exhaust, unique with that deep hollow vrooom, nothing sounds like it. Love it!
