Engine stalled

Twice in the last two weeks the engine has just stalled. Come up to red light and engine just stalls. Pull out of parking lot after work to go across 3 lanes of traffic and engine just stalls. Luckily it started right back up no issue before someone hit the car. No rhyme or reason. Just stalled. RPM seems to hunt around a little bit at times. Anyone have similar weird stalling. I plan to take it to dealer, but if they cannot recreate it, it could be tough to find unless it left a code in ECU.

I've personally never heard of that happening. I can't imagine that the valve is dirty enough to cause something like that on such a new car, as I'm assuming your mileage is very, very low.

Any chance you had recently filled the gas tank before the stalling occurred? I had similar symptoms after filling the tank, idle bouncing up and down when stopped to the point that on several occasions the DCT dropped into neutral and on at least three occasions the engine actually stalled. Started right back up and the car was not storing any codes. Ultimately it proved to the fuel tank breather valve and once that was replaced the issue was resolved.

I never had a stall but for me I had to replace ICV and rpms were hunting up down up down 1k, 500, 1k, 500.

Then i drove in 2nd gear 1k rpm 20mph through the whole town to get to the dealership. The last left turn into the road with oncoming traffic was fun because the car was going so slow! lol.

Glad it's resolved. Surprised they didn't just replace it.

Car has 42K. It is not garage queen. Where is fuel tank breather valve located? Part #?

Not sure, near the gas tank I would imagine. Mine was replaced under warranty by the dealer. The part is not expensive but my understanding is that the part is difficult to reach and labor intensive.

Here is a short video of how my idle fluctuated after filling the tank. The car did not stall in this video but the dealer found no codes and could not replicate so once I showed the SA the video and the service record from a fellow M3post member, they replaced the breather valve and solved the problem. The initial response from the head tech was replace the ICV but I provided the service record from the other guy's repair and they went that route first...

Unfortunately the breather valve is under the intake manifold towards the rear. I would recommend a couple tanks of gas with techron fuel additive especially on a day when you run it at the track.

Thanks for sharing that. Stalling and idling issues are almost always idle control value related, or fueling related. The idle control valve has plastic runners for each bank and I've seen them crack or the seal degrade over time. I've yet to see a fuel pump go out on these, but I have seen the low pressure fuel sensor time and time again, especially around 50/60K miles. Usually the car doesn't throw a fault for this until the actual pressure differs from the model by a large variance.

You can see the "idle strips" on each side which the dealer usually replaces at the same time as an ICV (and sometimes the associated hoses as well).

Yes, the ICV was the first thing the head tech wanted to replace. In hindsight I probably should have let them replace the ICV, see that the problem was not solved and then pursued the fuel tank breather valve route. Would have gotten a new ICV out of it!
