Blown Motor @ the track

So my S65 just rolled 119K miles on the original bearings, and I was at my 7th track event since purchasing it. I put off changing the rod bearings, and was enjoying the day chasing C7 Corvettes. On the third session of the day, I was chasing a C7 Z06, when BAM out of no where the engine blew (Rod Bearings)! See video below:

I bet 9 out of ten viewers of this thread will automatically assume it was my motor that blew

Brand new Corvette C7 Z06 w/ 8K miles on the clock suffered rod bearing failure:

Towed into the paddock

Brand new 8K mile car:

Axle-rod exited from the side of the engine:

Car and driver on the C7 (non Z06, but I'm pretty sure it's the same issue):

Blown engine @ 6K miles (Rod Bearing tight tolerances, metal fragment from filter?), Side airbag recall
http://www.caranddriver.com/reviews/...ate-one-page-3

Starter motor failure
http://www.caranddriver.com/reviews/...update-reviews

HVAC system, and axle seals failure
http://www.caranddriver.com/reviews/...update-reviews

Disturbing quote from the article on the engine failure: "Given the LT1’s tight tolerances and high-performance design, it didn’t take much to upset its workings. We’ve heard of a few similar accounts throughout the Stingray community and GM says it’s aware of the issue and is analyzing its manufacturing process for a root cause"

An E92 let loose here Sat. It was an early build (8/2010?) 2011 model. Locked up the drivetrain and was towed in to paddock.

I won't say it is reassuring to know our cars are not the only ones with rod bearing issues. At least GM says it is looking into the problem, unlike BMW.

Knock on wood, I've never ever seen any E9X M3 have any issues at the track, and I've been doing HPDE since late 2008. I went from a 335I-> M3, and did so because of how well they performed, lap after lap.

Let's see what GM does about this. Hold your praise until the recall.

And the corvette forums light up with how you should run -10w/10 oil instead of that thick 0w/40 oil...

Oh, btw, you had me on the hook. Nicely played.

Actually they are probably contacting an aftermarket company for coated bearings, and a Lawyer for a class action lawsuit

Yep, a 2008 and 2010. Very sad day for us S65 owners. The corner workers reported hearing strange sounds, but when the driver and instructor were asked they stated they didn't hear anything out of the ordinary. Sure enough, the next lap out the engine failed. It's safe to assume both M3s are out of warranty.
