Cold start noise

My car has always had the "cold start clunk" that happens a couple seconds after start up but in the last week or so the noise has changed and now I'm getting what sounds like a loud valve rattle immediately upon start up that lasts until the clunk, then is gone. I tried to record it but a cell phone doesn't do it justice. Anyone have any ideas?

I know you know the cold start clunk noise too , because I saw your comments in that thread and lots of S65's have it and such as my car too .
The only time that I saw that the clunk noise was 100% fixed was by replacing the vanos-gears .

But now about the noise in your video...
I never heard a rattle noise that loud and that long on a S65 !
And it is for me personal absolutely "NOT" normal !!!
Personal I would show that video at your BMW/Dealer ASAP .
Please keep us posted about that rattle noise..

Really hope it doesn't turn out to be your new rod bearings.

No, nothing to do with the bearings. It started a couple months ago (well before I had the bearings done) where it'd do this on every cold start, then it went away for awhile and I only got a single clunk on cold starts, now it is back to a prolonged rattle that ends with the usual clunk. Plus I can't think of anyway a bearing could make this noise without serious issues.

Will do. As I have said before it'd sometimes rattle and then clunk and sometimes just clunk. After switching to 5/40 the rattle went away (still had the clunk) until a couple days ago. Now it is worse than ever. As soon as the clunk happens all noise stops and the car runs beautifully.

Sounds like you should have probably addressed this issue instead of waisting your $ on the bearings. You could have actually done that much later, as some have told you. Now I can't imagine this being cheap to address, but I'd take it to the dealership, ASAP as Belgium suggested.

Lol, the only "some" who has told me that is you! Not trying to be rude but if you can look at my bearings (that are into the copper on ALL of the parting lines and edges, a debris groove all the way around one set, and several abnormal bare spots which look like someone took a grinder to them) and say it was a waste of money replacing them, you have no business commenting about bearings anymore.

I do think I have a vanos issue though. Just don't understand why it is only relegated to cold starts.

Please let us/me know what your BMW/Dealer think about the rattle and clunk noise in your video...
And probably they going to keep your car for a few days to try the cold start, but actually your video is more than enough proof to show them .
EDIT:
Was just reading a post that a BMW/Dealer confirmed that the rattle/knock noises at cold start was caused by the Vanos-Gears => # 95 http://www.m3post.com/forums/showthr...5#post18427965

Thanks in advance .

Re-read your threads. I wasn't the only one who told you that you could have waited. If you were hearing a noise on cold start, the best thing was to get it diagnosed, and not let the fear mongering on the boards get to you.

My guess is timing chain, but lets see what it turns out to be.

I have to say the clunk is normal because my '13 with 15k mile does it from time to time, I have to say only during cold starts. It sounds like an "initialization" sound.

The rattle/scratchy sound could be from your belt I believe..make sure your MS pulley is on tight, and the belt is not too loose.

You know, he's changed his rod bearings, right? So now we should also change our Vanos gears too, right?

I was thinking about the timing chain. Going to be tough to pin down. If it matters it started after a thousand mile road trip with a lot of aggressive driving.

Yes I know about his bearings , and this clunk/rattle noise has nothing to do with his replaced bearings , because I have the cold start clunk noise too and my bearings are NOT replaced .
But C'mon man I never said to anyone to replace any 5H1T !
I only said what a BMW/Dealer said to a member on here with the clunk noise and the cause was the Vanos-Gears , and I only said to OP go ASAP to your BMW/Dealer and show your video with the rattle/clunk noise and that's what I personal would do in this situation .
And can you please tell me what's wrong with that ?

Do you ever tried the brake procedure ?
Saw your car is a DCT , and it works only for DCT and I can tell that it works 100% for me .

Nothing wrong with that. Better safe than sorry. There is an indy shop a mile from the house so I'll see what they say.

Thanks for reminding me!! I just tried the brake thing. Forgot about it. Stupid thing worked. Small alternator clunk as usual but no rattles or knocks at all. So weird.

Yep , I tested the brake procedure for months !
My results are...
Only start ups when the engine is cold for about 24 hours ..

9 days in a row with brake procedure => No clunk noise .
Day 10 without brake procedure => Clunk noise was back !
I did this test 3 times ,and it always turns out with the same result !
BTW...I told it to Mike-Benvo (BPM-Tuning) too , and he said he heard the clunk noises everywhere when he tuned cars all over the world on Skype !
So I told him about the brake procedure and he said to me...It's f@cking unbelievable ...

So with the brake trick you get no noises of any kind? I've never had a cold start without a small clunk 2-3 seconds in, but I assume that is normal. The brake trick didn't stop the clunk (although it wasn't as loud as usual) but it did stop all the valve noise leading up to it. Question is, why? And do I still need to take it in?

Yep with the brake trick 0 noises here .
Like I said...Yes you should take it in because the rattle noise before your clunk noise is huge !
At least personal I would call them and just send them your video and hear what they think about it...
EDIT :
Yes "WHY" ? is the big question...

Good idea, I'll stop by the indy place on my way home and let them hear it, see if they have any ideas. Btw, that rattle noise is what I was trying to describe on the other thread awhile back but couldn't catch it on video. Not sure why it comes and goes like that.
