I sold my E92 M3 before I got to try the Castrol Edge Fluid Titanium 0w-40 that is made in Germany. But I do run it in my E38 and I like it far more than the Mobil 1 0w-40 that I used for about a year. The car revs more freely and the instant low end torque while cruising is always at it's best. You guys should try the newer German Castrol if the Mobil 1 0w-40 weight works. It's a group IV. base stock too if I'm not mistaken, top notch stuff.

Zinc levels
Quote:
You mentioned the last 3 were with Mobil 1 the others were with TWS 10-60 Correct? I was looking specifically at the zinc levels. I have heard recently that the original Mobil 1 has less zinc than it did previously. I also heard that the new Extended wear Mobil contains the same level of zinc that the old Mobil 1 contained. |

Zinc and M1
Quote:
for a long time who has always been a Mobil 1 advocate recently told me some of the Mobil 1 products have dipped to 600 ppm on zinc and that that worries him. (they do it because zinc is bad for catalytic converters) He said ideally you would want to be closer to 1000 ppm. Even for modern engines zinc is important its stops metal to metal contact. It sounds like the "new improved" extended wear version of M1 may have higher ppm zinc. I have not thoroughly investigated this but I would keep an eye on zinc levels if it gets closer to 600 ppm you always could use an additive. Race oils typically will have more Zinc. There are tons of threads on the zinc topic but I thought it was worth mentioning because of change to Mobil 1. |

I find it ironic that the liquimoly has almost no moly in it...if I'm reading your reports correctly, while the mobil1 does have a nice bit of moly in it.

I'm not sure that's the same oil? Pennzoil discontinued the 5w40 Euro "Ultra" oil and replaced it with a "Platinum" designation. It may just be a labeling change but it seems strange they downgraded the Euro to their lesser tier of oil. Also, the old Ultra could be ordered directly from Pennzoil web site but that's not an option for the new Platinum. http://www.amazon.com/Pennzoil-55004...&keywords=5w40 |

I do like pennzoil ferrari oil. I have spend about $500 for doing oil change in this month every week I tested tws edge, m1 0-40, castrol 5w-50, penzoil 5w-40 euro. so I ended to using penzoil. it much smoother than the m1 and cooler to me.

https://mobiloil.com/~/media/amer/us...ecs-guide.ashx I believe there is a new standard for some oils that limit phospohorus to 800 ppm. Zinc and phosphorus are related and I do not know whether the new standard applies to Mobil 1 0W40 or if it does, whether it can comply and still maintain the 1100 ppm of zinc. |

^ good find..
The 0-40 looks good according to that chart hopefully it hasn't changed. Its that 0-20 and one other "advanced mileage blend" that look really low on zinc. I think its worth keeping an eye on the 0-40 zinc levels though. |

I've read that a couple people mixes 0-40 and 10-60.....as strange as that might sound, wouldn't that make sense because it's the best of both worlds?
I'm currently using TWS Edge 10-60 but considering making the change to Mobil1 0-40..hence why I'm reading through this 43 page thread/debate.

I would not recomend you. Few weeks ago I was using m1 0-40 and it was about 90. me and friend going to somewhere also having some fun with hard driving after that oil temperture went up to 260 never seen that high before after turn off the car fan was on for 30mins. I think that is not a good sign with that oil. Last edited by Gumulri; 03-29-2015 at 10:18 PM.. |

(Posted also in the oil analysis reports thread, but this is good info for 0W-40)
My latest report below. Lead back to normal thankfully, not sure what to make of the iron - decreased some, but still high. Nickel increased however. Iron level seems to correspond to the switch to 0W-40 (8/30/14 was the first 0W-40, previous two were 10W-60). Maybe I ought to go back to 10W-60, see what happens? I wonder if the initial lead spike was due to the switch to 0W-40 and having a fine layer wear off due to the light weight oil, but not it's settled at a happy clearance with the choice of oil, any thoughts? |

This report (combined with the following statement from BITOG) makes me feel like my iron isn't out of the ordinary (which isn't to say it's good, though). If you linearly extrapolate W///'s numbers to the same interval as mine, he'd be at ~10-11ppm on 10W-60 and around 25-30ppm on 0W-40.
From BITOG: (Iron) is the only wear metal that accurately and linearly increases with the length of time the oil has been in service. It has many sources inside of an engine, most commonly coming from cylinder liners, camshaft lobes, crankshaft journals, and oil pumps. |
