+1. First interval with m1 I experienced what I'd call excessive oil consumption. As of 2500 miles on the second interval I have consumed almost none.

Idling and part throttle will consume more oil too. If you are in traffic alot it uses more oil.
My E36 M3 has an afinity for the taste of oil. It has consumed a disturbing amount of oil since I purchased the car in 2001. 150K miles later (170K total on the odometer) and its still running great but still eating oil. While I dont like topping off oil all the time, I dont think a BMW eating oil is cause for concern.

I'm about 3,500 miles on my first change in my 09 and the oil indicator has only moved down 1 segment from max level. This includes a mix of weekend only driving (fairly aggressive) and DD back and forth to work on nicer days. I switched from Liquid Moly 10W-60.

Some burning oil is ok. Just look at the manual, the "acceptable" amount of oil consumption (in 10w60) is pretty ridiculous and way more than what people are seeing with M1

Got my free oil change today at the dealer today (M1 0W40 dumped, TWS installed by dealer)

Impression: The engine oil temp took forever to get up to the 210F range, and the engine feels extremely sluggish. I'm probably gonna dumped the fresh TWS and refill with 0W40, I just don't like how I have to drive almost 10 miles to reach operating temp, and when I get there, the motor feels detuned.

It seemed to me like I was adding one quart during the TWS oil changes, which worked out to about 6k miles for my driving. Just put in M1 and seem to be down 0.5q at around 2k miles. Not much to go on, but looks like I may experience slightly higher oil consumption with the thinner oil, which makes sense to me

I just switched back to TWS after changing the bearings. I agree with you. Takes longer to get up to temp, engine feels detuned. However, engine still feels smooth and 'good' after my 2 hrs commute. Whereas with 0w40, my engine would feel a bit raw after this commute. Guess I have no choice but to live with a 'detuned' S65 and stick back to TWS.

Why do you have no choice of which oil goes in your car

I have a weekly 2 hrs commute each way and I don't like how the engine sounds and feel after/during that. 0-40 is great for local and every day use but it seem to shear down too much for my use. You can find my post earlier. I think I will stick back to TWS.

You could try a jub of 0W40 from Walmart, then add 4 bottles of Mobil 1 15W50 to thicken it up a little. It's been recommended by a couple of the engine builders here.

I saw those posts and debated on that for a while actually. I decided to stick back to Castrol Edge Professional 10/60 for a few reasons:

- people seem to indicated that the Castrol is very a light weight 60 and sheer down pretty fast. The new Edge also seem to be even thinner from what I can tell than the original TWS.
- although the bearings are worn, the condition of them actually didn't seem too bad.
- my car is always garaged and I think I only had to start it below freezing outdoor 2 times through out my ownership. However, being in CA, during summer, the car is being driven in 100+ heat for 2hrs continuously at times.
- before the MRF thread regarding rod bolts popped up, I was planning to redo the bearings in another 85k miles. I want to see for myself if Castrol is still too thick with the WPC bearings and I want to just use one oil and be consistent instead of using different oil in summer vs winter.

Cheers.

im sorry but thats completely false. This oil withstands multiple 25 minute track sessions with oil temps around the 3/4 marker with no issues.

I've switched to 0w40 after replacing my rod bearings and the difference huge... car runs much smoother, revs much more effortlessly, less vibration on idle / cold start.

Best part is its so cheap you can swap it every 3k miles

I can't imagine something more ill considered than running an oil with a thinner viscosity and lower film strength in an boosted engine, tracked at elevated temps....but maybe thats just me.

I understand others have great experience with the 0w40. Maybe mine is just different. I agree that on cold start, the engine is much smoother with the 0w40 and during my daily work commute of 13 miles, the engine feels great. Trust me, I would love to continue to use 0w40. It's cheap and available locally where I can just pick them up the day I need to change oil. Engine feels smooth, more lively, lower oil temp, improved gas mileage, etc. It has a lot of pros. Although my oil temp is now lower after the bearing change with 10w60 than before the bearing change on 0w40.

However, I can say for sure that during the last 30 minutes or so of my 2hrs commute and after I get off the freeway, my engine feels less smooth and sounded more raw than when I am running 10w60. Much more noticeable during the summer months when it's really hot. There is a relatively steep hill I have to climb going home and the engine most definitely feel it has to work harder to get up this hill with 0w40 than 10w60 after the 2hrs commute. My BS oil report also showed that my 0w40 was shearing out of range. This is with 5k change interval on 0w40. 3k miles would be oil change every 5-6 weeks for me. That's a bit too often/much. If one day, I no longer have that weekly 2 hrs commute, I would go back to 0w40 in a heartbeat.

Ever since the lawsuit between Castrol and Mobil1, full synthetic doesn't mean what it used to. Looking at the selection in WalMart and Meijer, there is a plethora of "full synthetic" even the Meijer brand, for 17.99 for 5 qt jug. What a joke.
Mobil1 is Group3 now as it qualifies as full synthetic-- whatever that means (highly refined hydrocracked petrol based/ mineral oil?), and I wouldn't trust it in the S65. Of the guys insisting on using 0w40 why not go Redline which is Group5?
Also, Clevite says that dirt accounts for most of bearing wear, statistically. If you're running some kind of high flow filter element one must consider the possibility of more dirt slipping by. Even stock ..... Why extend OCIs? I consider 7.5k extended. Relatively speaking motor oil is cheap.

Agreed about the "Castrol EDGE" , noticed from last year that my S65 runs smoother , and consumes less of oil .
And Maleks stock S65 with only 39K on it had yesterday serious bearing failure with Mobile 1 and had a crack in engine block !
But lately I'm thinking the bearing problem starts in the German factory, because I've saw bearing change on a s65 with 89K on it and Castrol TWS was used , and the bearings were in a very good condition .
Others are failing with only 6.7K on it what proves even more like I said it's a factory problem ...incorrect fitting problems from bearings which causes the bearing wear !
For the moment I see the S65 as a lottery !

It could be fitting problem or the quality of the bearings themselves. From the wear patterns we're seeing, it's hard to say one or another, or for that matter anything. Just assumptions my friend ... there could be a plethora of reasons. We're all trying hard to get to the bottom of this. Each torn apart engine is showing different wear characteristics. E92zero is a classic. How many engines out there are like it or with even better bearings. Who knows.

Nothing wrong with redline. But M1 is an excellent oil, readily available at any auto parts store, and costs much less than a boutique oil like redline.
