Such a cool build!

Reminds me of the Volvo "HotRod Woody" I saw at Essen a few years back...

Wow. Just, wow! There's not a terribly long list of people who set out to do a build like this and see it through. Most start looking at the price list and all the custom work required, then go crawling back to the Chevy small block section of the Edelbrock catalog lol Big... no HUGE props to you for this project. I'm extremely excited to see how it turns out.

Thanks guys, really keeps me motivated!

If you’ve followed this thread, you’d know the amount of time and effort I spent trying to come up with a design to shoehorn a large intercooler and at least 400 square inches of radiator surface (FFR ’33 is 320”) behind the 1933 Grille. The S65 is made of magnesium and a notorious heat sink. Karl Hugh, Chief Engineer of Active Autowerke, who was making the intercooler and supplied the SC kit went out of his way to make sure I understood unequivocally that the risk of detonation is unannounced and the result is a suddenly spectacularly blown motor, while the risk of overheating is much more gradual and I could always pull over and wait for the motor to cool down. Accordingly, Karl’s intercooler had to be massive and had to be in front. C&R, who was making the radiator, was left with an extraordinary challenge of building a radiator to cool that heat sink behind the intercooler in the limited space available. They assured me that they found space to cool a VIPER V10 in a Kharman Ghia (if you haven’t seen that project on the internet, and you’re actually reading this thread, it’s a must!!!).

Ultimately, we settled on a narrow core in the shape and the full size of the grille right out to the rim. We moved the oil cooler to the trunk with massive 12AN lines and the SC and trans coolers to the back as well so the radiator could have as much real estate as possible. Both had to be designed to lay back at the 26° (I took a poll of builders on the '33 forum earlier in the year and that seemed to be the consensus, and then I found that most aesthetically pleasing in mock-up). After numerous conference calls between Active and C&R, I finally took the ’33 Grille on a plane as carry-on (I said it was very delicate art ☺) to visit Active in Miami to work out the intercooler and then they shipped the finished intercooler and Grille to C&R in Indianapolis so they could design the radiator around it. Critical to my aesthetic design was the intercooler outlet was a perfect straight shot into the plenum. It’s been six months since I last saw the Grille. Friday it all arrived. Tyler, a BMW dealer tech manager with a super heavy workload on BMW’s all week, but also a shared passion for this project came out to help. Took the two of us all weekend to work out and fabricate the mounts. With the radiator and intercooler mounted to the Grille and trying to position in mid air so all lined up in the end exactly, it definitely felt like wrestling a gorilla. We came to euphemistically calling the unit the “’33 cooling module.”

Here’s the radiator with it’s core in the shape of the Grille

Final radiator design called for inlet and outlet on top, so the IC out can come straight through the middle.

Given the weight of the cooling module, decided it needed a very solid base and support on the side. We used a pair of Brookeville aftermarket 1932 Frame Horns tucked under the module, welded to a removable frame and built a keel support off the front to bolt to the bottom of the grille. It’s a hot rod, so had to add spider webs for the gussets. For the sides, cut the FFR brackets off at the nub and compound bent a pair of tubes and added half–moon tabs for the attachment points.

You can just see the web if look through the Grille.

Got the driver’s side plumbed in, need to switch out fittings for the passenger side of the radiator. Took measurements to get material to fab the intercooler inlet tubing from the SC.

The Finished product:

A year in the making. Super stoked with how it all turned out. Huge shout out to Active Autowerke and C&R Racing. Amazing people to work with, super patient, cooperative with each other and other vendors involved. I can't speak more highly about the process and the results.

ECM came from KMS this week too. Look's spectacular and intimidating, but that story is for a different day. Lot's of schematic studying on tap for early mornings this week though!

Looks great but I'm surprised you went all the way to Actice to fab the inter cooler. There's plenty of great talent that would've done it on LI.

Anxiously awaiting the start!

He has Active SC and had them fab several components already. Why would he then use another company for the intercooler

Anywho. Great work OP. Look forward to seeing this done.

Nice update and the S65 is not made out of Magnesium.

You are absolutely correct!!! I normally triple-check things like this and am really shaking my head. In doing my pre-buy of the engine research, someone who I apparently thought was better informed drilled me that whatever I do, aluminum motor mounts and no steel bolts or I'll melt the magnesium block. I've followed that advice like gospel. Thanks for correcting me. --I
