It will be interesting to see what Malek finds when he pulls his engine down to see what is wrong with it as he had been using Mobil 1 for a long time.

What's wrong with his car? Should be interesting for sure since he's been tracking with M1 too.

It's not an air-cooled car so you don't need to change oils based on the climate. You can run 0w40 year round.

Because the oil runs at the same temp regardless of air temp?
Mine certainly doesn't.

It blew up, rod bearings. He used TWS for quite a while though, made the comment he thinks it is more oil starvation from certain corners of tracking.

The Vi also helps, I have stated this before 10-40 is kind of a red headed step child because the modifiers in it actually make it worse than the 5-40. It is thicker cold and thinner hot. Not what we want.
Do oil manufacturers when making an Xw-YY oil, start with an "X" base viscosity and add friction modifiers to get the "YY"?

So perhaps a 0-40, they would start with a 0 base, then add FM's to get the 40 multigrade? And for a 10-40 they start with a 10 base, and add modifiers to get the 40? So a 10w-40 should have a thicker base?

I'm trying to learn

"lifetime" is technically true, the fluid/lubricant will last the entire life of the component for which it's used for. If your differential failed at 60K miles due to excessive wear from old fluid, then the fluid served the lifetime of the component...

Has anyone tried Castrol's new Edge 0W40? It's similar in price to M1 0W40 and I'm assuming it's a reformulated "German" Castrol Edge 0W30 that is also BMW-LL01 approved, but I have not looked into the specs.

It is thinner than the Mobil 1 and has less VI so it will not hold viscosity as long as the mobil.
On a side not though I run the Castrol 0-40 in the wifes 328 just because the mobil is overkill.

I put the Mobil 1 0W40 in after doing the a preventative maintenance rod bearing change recently. I don't track or have a supercharger and think it will be fine. I would also consider a 5W40 but am not sure it is necessary. Prior to the recent rod bearing swap, the car received only 10W60 from 2008-2014 and 62k miles, and was a regular year round driver in NH where we have real winter. I am no longer scared about running other than the recommended oil, and think thinner is probably the better choice for my driving.

I have just read this entire thread!

Some good information in here. I appreciate all of you who are posting data and results of your experiments.

As a Design Engineer (powersports), I can confirm that BMW choosing X oil has to do with many variables, not just pure performance/reliability. If only we could design products without limitations from the accountants/marketing/product planning/etc. I am positive that the Oil Change Interval played a part. What a ridiculously high interval.

I just purchased an 09 w 30k miles. It had a BMW oil change 2k miles ago. I will change it after 7k miles and send it for Blackstone.
I have yet to decide what oil will go back into it, but I run M1 040 in my 335i and 328i. I am convinced it is a great oil. I am also convinced the TWS is a great oil, but not sure that I want to run that either.
NOT ALL OILS ARE CREATED EQUAL The name and number on the bottle DO NOT tell the whole story.

I am off to read another ~25 page thread on S65 oil/bearing stuff.
When I do my Blackstone report I will share it here.

Malek ran M1 for a long time in his car and it didn't end well.

Probably M1 bought him time. Looks like the damage was done long before.

I think people are a lot wiser thanks to the forum and warming up the car before pushing it.

Ignorance is bliss.

There is no way of knowing either way...but I would have thought running an M3 hard in a warm climate with a thinner oil with a lower film strength is unlikely to end well.

That's why we Aussies are sticking to 10w-60. Climate is a lot warmer here, and even our winters are reasonably warm to bring the oil temp up to 100 Celsius.

I don't know what to make of this bearing issue any longer. Variables are mindboggling.

Malek's bearing look like they've been chewed up by a playful puppy!

Who knows what my bearings look like after almost seven years and 46k km.

One thing for sure ... religiously oil changed every 12 months and no beating the crap out until the required oil temp has been reached. Last two years, until the oil level shows up on the dash, no playing ... avoid taking the tacko over 3k rpm.

You are reading my mind !
No worries my friend i've heard your videos and your S65 sounds good cold and warmed up just like mine , let's hope to keep it this way !
For me personal I think it's more a problem from out the factory... a bearing fitting problem !But i'm not sure about it !
So let's hope we are lucky!

Engineer to engineer, you'll just have to take my word for it. I don't step in when I don't know what I'm talking about when it comes to bearing clearance ect, but this topic on oil temp is from real world experience. Plenty of people have seen the same thing.
+1
I have been using m1 0-40 for about 4000 mls now
only thing I hate about it is eating a quart every 700 mls or if I was doing some canyon drivng then 500 mls other than no problems and get more respond with power, smooth.

That oil consumption would freak me out. I won't even add a quart of 10W60 in 8000 miles and I only drive balls out as mine isn't a daily driver.

All engines are different. Regardless of oil grade, some people on here claim to never add a drop of oil while others need to add it frequently.

Could also try splitting the difference and running a 5W40. Maybe Castrol or Liquimoly or Redline.
