I'd love to get some feedback from you all on the noise.

I have a road trip today that will total around 600 miles so hopefully it'll make it through that ok.

I'm thinking I should make an appointment at the dealer next week to have it brought to their attention since I only have 7000 miles left on the warranty and they likely won't do anything until some serious actually happens that throws a code (or rod lol)
Sorry man,saw the video ... it's bad news !
Everytime when I listen to a posted video on here I put always my Sennheiser/Pro head phone on , and every time i'm right when it's bearing failure or not !
I've heard on here several video's with similar ticking and rattle noises just like yours => "bearing failures" , I study and memorize the failure sound , I listen to them about 20-30 and more times , only reason is...so I learn to hear how my S65 not should sound !
So i'm sorry man, prepare you for the worst !
My personal advice is ....cancel your road trip and take no risks !
If you don't want a blown engine =>stop driving your car and call ASAP your BMW/Dealer and let them hear the horror sound of your S65 ! => Send them your video !
We saw and heard enough sad examples on here !
I prefer to say.....no worries man, but in this case ...you should be worried !

The principle is that oil is forced into the gap between the bearing shells and the crankshaft and then the crank turns on a film of oil....the crank surface and the bearing surface should never ever touch.
During the combustion stroke a high load is transmitted down the rod onto the upper bearing shell which tries to squash the oil out between it and the crank. If that should happen then wear will occur. If the collision between the two surfaces causes a noise (that you hear as a tap or or knock) then you are pretty much screwed - the load created by a 400bhp motor at 8200rpm is considerable, and the shell simply won't sustain the impacts for very long.
As a very short term fix a mate insisted on putting new bearings into his old car that had bad bearings (and a worn crank) - it didn't make 10 miles.

Why the Blackstone oil report is showing normal values where he has rod bearing ticking problem?

The report is 7000 miles old.
Its a 2012 so it has the lead free bearings.
Thats the best I can come up with.

So my build date was late 2010 (december, I think); does that mean I have lead bearings? My blackstone report should be coming in some time next week.

Garage List
2008 BMW E92 M3  [0.00]
Hi Guys,

I just wanted to share my experience with this. After hearing some ticking from my engine, and being the anal audiophile I am, I quickly took my car to EAS in Anaheim, CA to see what they had to say about it. steve@eas gave it a listen and said he was 90% sure it was worn rod bearings that were making the noise.

I want to thank Tom@EAS for being very professional and helpful during my whole ordeal. What I really appreciated from Tom was that he actually advised me to try have BMW NA repair it since I was only 4 months out of CPO warranty. He didn't want to take my business right away, and said that I should come back to EAS as a last resort. In the meantime, he advised that I take and oil sample and send it to Blackstone.

Blackstone diagnosed my issue as rod bearing wear without knowing that I already had the assumption that I had this problem. This confirmed the problem for me and I proceeded to contact BMW NA about my issue.

BMW NA suggested that I take it to a BMW dealership to diagnosis my car, and they can then decide whether they will cover the cost of repairs. I took my car to Bob Smith BMW at Calabasas, CA for the diagnosis. They wanted to charge me over $2,300.00 for the diagnosis alone, the reason being that they claimed that dropping the oil pan and looking inside was the only way to surely diagnose my problem. Since any support from BMW NA wasn't even a certainty, I took my car home and gave Tom a call.

I brought in my car on Monday and EAS was finished with it Friday (today). I was very impressed with the workmanship and the thoroughness of the job. They made every effort to remove all bearing debris in the engine, and they did a terrific job. They even cleaned my entire engine bay. It looks like it was straight off the showroom floor!

They replaced the piston rod bolts with APR rod bolts, which have threads that are 10x stronger than OEM bolts, and replaced my bearing with surface treated WPC bearings, which are more durable than OEM bearings without compromising clearance.

If any of you hear any ticking from your S65, don't take any chances. Stop driving the car, get and oil analysis, and give EAS a call!

Below are pictures EAS took of my worn bearings and my Blackstone report:

You should send your EAS bill to BMW NA along with all the photos & reports you have.

When I saw the bearings of "surewin" it was urgent to replace them !
Also when we see the amount lead and copper of the Blackstone report , it was very clear !
Conclusion....

1-surewin was hearing...he said "some" ticking noise , so personal i'm thinking that the ticking noise was "not loud" , and I would love to hear the ticking sound if there was a video of the ticking noise to put into my database ?

2-surewin had the Blackstone report and was showing the increased numbers of lead and copper !

3- surewin made the right decision by contact BMW , but as always they f@cked up by asking the charge over $2,300.00 for the diagnosis alone ?!?!
WTF ?!?! so goodwill was clearly out of the question and f@cked up again as usual !
And asking to myself..do they have at least the knowledge, i'm not sure about it !!!

4-Thank God there is EAS this guys have at least the knowledge and are updated about our damn bearings ,so surewin made again the right decision .

5-This case went the right way of making the right and quick decisions and contact the right people ,so a S65 was saved here !

6-Would love to have EAS with all their knowledge here in Belgium because BMW s@cks all over the world !

7-surewin is nr ? Saw this week almost every day a bearing failure in this thread, but also out of this thread I see people posting the rattle and ticking sound !

8-When I start my car i'm always focust 100% of the time to listen to my engine ,my wifes says don't get "paranoia" about the sound of your engine, my answer was....i'm not alone and know why ! I'm always listen to my engine because BMW has made it this way....it is the ticking sound of a time bomb !!!
Thank God my S65 is running perfect ...the big question is => for how long ???
But need to say i'm not seeing any Euro failures ?

Did anything ever happen with this? I think the easiest/best thing would be to start a Kickstarter. Then people on this forum can commit to the purchase (making a group buy list is pointless since half the people on it will inevitably flake), and you can get exposure outside of the BMW forum world, and maybe even garner some public attention.

See Malek's response below a couple pages back when I asked the same question.

I would be more than willing to help invest in this. It sure is less costly than removing the motor and having the crank journals polished to the correct size for proper clearances.

Keep in mind that most had to rev the engine to about 2,000 RPM to hear the slapping sounds associated with the bearings. You should definitely get an oil analysis if you haven't done so since you have the older bearings, and should see high levels of somthing if they're worn.

Also this are (Spanish) cases that also should be counted into this forum of Bearing failures !
Seems that the counter is working non stop........ ?!?!
BTW....20K Euro's to replace the Bearings ?!?! That's >>> USD $ 26,495 !!! <<<
Are these BMW bearings made of "GOLD" ???
That's why...God bless America and EAS !
Thanks for sharing man !
