How incompetent do you have to be to design an engine that blows up at < 25k and it's not an assembly issue?
Gotta say, these 2011 and newer engines blowing is even more alarming than the early engines failing at higher mileage. It may be that TWS contributes, but with these engines that fail early, you could probably fill your sump with unicorn tears and it wouldn't last much longer. |

0-40 and proper warm ups are the key! I really need to get around to writing my rebuild thread been lazy. My rod clearances were .00125-.00130 (plasti) across the board which were tighter then I wanted but didn't have time or money to have crank ground at the time. Will be pulling pan off to inspect bearings over the winter should have 5-10k on them by then with only 0-40 oil.

Do you really think 0w-40 would allow this engine that failed at 20k to last 150k?
I might buy it on the engines that fail north of 60k, but it seems like this one was doomed from the start. |

I feel like it would but its a hard to tell. As it was said earlier some engines are way tighter then others. There also are cars that have close too 200k with 10-60 in them. the 0-40 may lengthen its life but in some cases most likely the damage was already done.

The last few reported failures have been in 93 AKI states. There are more cars in the US and probably more miles on them due to the cheap fuel to account for also. The guy on M5board.com gets lots of blown S85 engines from Germany too.

All we can do at this point is keep track of what cars have had bearings changed and narrow it down.

I just received my bearings and rod bolts and pan gasket. The bearings will go FedEx to WPC today. 08 with 60k and 10W60 only. Will likely change to 0W40 or 5W40 after the bearing change. Hoping to do this job in about 2 weeks.

I think there are mainly two buckets of failures: "high" mileage 08 cars and the newest cars with the harder bearings. With the absurdly low mileage failures on the new cars, one would think it's assembly / tolerance stack related.
I wonder if plastigauge is good enough? Seems like it would be hard to properly measure the clearances working through the oil pan. |

8th of hard driving reclining driving. Hard non BMW break in but always warmed up right. Tws for 50k than mix of sometimes 0w40 or tws. Engine purring like kitten and never been stronger. I'll change bearings at 100k and make a big post

Lots of factors could lead to this type of failure. It's a high performance engine and shit is going to go wrong. That's why they come with a warranty. |

Reminds me and sounds like this>http://www.m3post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1010787 And another about noise >over and out built 2013 >http://www.m3post.com/forums/showthr...4#post16292594 But your noise is louder and so even worse ! His car is right now at his BMW/Dealer and we are waiting for update ! Said it also to him and so also to you ........ Stop driving your car and take it ASAP to your BMW/Dealer ! You know it...we all know it---> take no risks---> think about our damn bearings ! Don't wait after a hole in your engine ! Last week i saw one on here of end 2013 with "6700 miles" on it ,yes actualy a brand new engine ---> it was over and out ! So again take no risks man !
