OEM Exhaust mod or Megan Exhaust?

Just got my e93 M3 2 weeks ago and love it so far. The stock exhaust is decent but I want a little more sound to enjoy with the top down. Previously I had a e92 335i with the BMW PE and it sounded amazing and had the perfect balance between having the stock sound when cruising and aggressive but not overly loud when on the throttle. I wanted to go MPE but the price is very discouraging and I need a quick affordable fix.

Seems like my 2 options are either the stock exhaust mod (quoted $400 from a shop) vs Megan exhaust. At first I was shocked to see people putting Megan product on their M's but after listening to it on youtube I have to admit for the money it sounds great (and looks good too). The stock exhaust mod also sounds like a MPE with the bass turned up a bit more but I can't grasp how loud these systems sound inside the cabin. I am mainly concerned about drone and am curious which system has a louder drone. If anyone had both systems or heard both I would greatly appreciate your opinion.

Stock mod
Pros: cheap, retains stock look, sounds good.
Cons: drone? can't reverse

Megan
Pros: Can revert back to stock if not happy, lighter and looks better, possibly sound better?
Cons: also drone? Almost twice as expensive as stock mod

Directly compared the OEM mod is better. With TP's the Megan is better. Use the Search tool for more info as this has been discussed in length several times.

go oem exhaust mod. i have it and i still roll down my windows to hear my exhaust note like it was day when when i got it. there isn't any drone

I had the exact same thought when I was looking to do the oem exhaust mod, I ended up with the Megan for a few good reasons. Even though the Megan might cost more but you do get larger muffler tips whereas with the oem mod you'll have to buy EAS 80MM tips so your total costs might add up to the same as buying the Megan. I'm glad I went with the Megan route because I had to revert back to stock and all I had to do was reinstall my OEM now I'm selling the Megan if you're interested.

I have actually had both, I started off with OEM exhaust mod and realized that it is not loud enough for my liking. Then I bought the Megan and absolutely loved it, not to mention the weight you save. I was holding both exhaust and you can really tell that the Megan is a lot lighter.

I have exhaust mod and luvin it.. The reason being is that "it's bang for your buck" and not worrying getting pulled over by 5.0... Plus no drone and sounds amazing!!

I am not a fan of how Megan sounds. Also a heard a few people having issues with Megan installs.

I heard OEM mod is louder in the higher RPM, and megan is louder down low.

I think I'm leaning towards the OEM as well with the tips. Eventually I want a PE but for now the OEM mod seems to fit the bill.

I am probably biased but test pipes +tune+megan sounds awesome and is money well spent. I have an e93 as well and they had to cut a rear support bar to accomodate the megan. Not sure if there is a megan currently offered for the e93. Bizarre how anyone could suggest that this setup sounds bad lol.

I was gonna go with the Megan route with my TP's. But I ended up getting the Remus Race and I love it!

I think it all depends on which OEM mod you want to do. The straight through mod sounds very good when paired with the OEM xpipe, you start doing an aftermarket xpipe or TPs it is very raspy. The more civilized version of the OEM exhaust mod actually sounds pretty darn good with the TPs.

A few of the earlier Megans did have some install issues, nothing that a muffler shop couldn't fix in a matter of minutes and very little cash outlay. Early Megans on some of the mufflers the tips were on upside down, these were the real early ones that were riveted on.

The later Megan is actually put together quite well. I'll take the Pepsi challenge with any exhaust anyday. BTW, I bought my Megan for $525.00 where are you spending $800 for a Megan?

WTF are you talking about..sounds nothing like an E46 M3. I've owned both my E46 M3 had Supersprint headers, 100cell cats, SS midpipe with no resonator and a set of Borla cans and I assure you the Megan on and E92 with test pipes sounds nothing like that..

My 04 E46 M3 with headers, 100cpi cats and Borla..

Megan with testpipes..

So you get this award...

I tried searching for the 2 different OEM mods but couldn't find a definitive answer.

From what I understand:
-Quieter OEM mod = removing the fiberglass inside then sealing it back up without changing out the perforated tube.
-Louder OEM mod = remove fiberglass and switch the perforated tube with a straight pipe.

I've also seen some videos where they replaced the perf pipe with straight and put the fiberglass back in. Does that make it any better?

I definitely don't want to cut anything in the car so maybe megan exhaust isn't for me. I saw it going for $650 ish so with install it'll come out to almost double that of exhaust mod.

Ok after some more research it seems like the OEM mod is just replacing the pipe and putting everything back including the wig. Hopefully I'm right this time!
