Lots of clunking that sounds like it's coming from the differential.

Mostly when rolling idle and then getting back on the gas or in low gear and getting off the gas. Seems like it's related to load transfer. I thought maybe its the infamous broken bolts but I got under the car and didn't see any signs of broken bolts and no signs of the differential hitting anything around it. Does this mean the internals of the differential are pretty much done?

I just changed the oil in the differential and the DCT transmission and had it analyzed by Blackstone. The differential oil had about 41k miles on it and the DCT fluid had about 76k miles on it. Both came back with no issues.

I have the same problem, but that happens when the car is cold, and after driving around for about 5 minutes, that sound is gone. I also changed diff fluid with boosted modifier and checked diff mounts, everything looks ok.
Does your sound go away too in a few minutes?

Yup. Used the FM Booster.

Not sure but having checked out. Problem is that I called a few indy shops here and no one wants to look at it because they say they don't have the tools for it. Only one shop agreed to it but told me they couldn't take me until May 3.

I have the same issue but have not used FM booster. I also have AKG 95A diff mounts, and mounting bolts are all ok. I pulled my half-shafts and opened up my inner CV's to clean/inspect/re-grease and they looked fine. I'm on my second diff (original had worn input bearings) and it only has 18k on it so clutch packs "should" be ok. Before installing diff 4k miles ago, I pulled the diff cover off to inspect the ring+pinion and it looked fine. Didn't measure backlash but nothing looked out of the ordinary.

I'm curious what you find, I'm going to try adding some FM additive and see if that helps my situation.

After changing the diff fluid; try and go to parking lot and drive in several figure eights from left than to right. See if that may help.

I never got a chance to do that after I replaced the fluid and I did start to wonder if that could be the cause of some of the issues. I just need to find a place to do it. Not many large empty parking lots around here that I could do that in.

Even if you don't do the figure-eights, BMW says the noise will go away within 500 miles of fluid change.

It's been about 1k miles now. I haven't noticed any improvements.

Does it happen when the car is cold? In my case, i hear terrible grinding noise only when the car is cold, then as it warmes up, in about 5 minutes that noise is gone

I did use fm booster and did lots of left and right circles, after 1000 miles no changes. I am beginning to think that it may be something else.I have to say that i noticed this issue right after we installed catless x-pipe

If it is a drive shaft issue, does the sound go away as the car warmes up or stays there at all times? Anyone can answer this question?

It was inconsistent, but overtime started to happen more frequently. It didn't seem to relate to if the card was cold or warmed up.

On my car, I'm starting to point towards worn transmission mounts. I'm tearing into it on Saturday and will report back what I find. Doesn't look too bad to replace.

I don't have FM booster and my diff groans and moans when temps are cold, I perceive this to be normal operation. I could add FM booster to reduce the noise but wouldn't be getting the same clutch-lockup.

What was the drive shaft issue? Worn U-Joint? CSB? Guibo?

Guys this is totally normal. Had it day 1 and have over 70k and recently had another issue where they inspected driveshaft and it was in perfect shape. The special fluid isn't for the clunk but rather its a differential whine at slow speed turns, not load-off load movements. Its simply a bit of built in play between diff and driveshaft

My car definitely doesn't make any clunking noises. I have 75K. I can feel the slack in the driveline when it goes from loaded to unloaded but it's nowhere near a clunk.

I brought mine to the dealer today because of a "ting, ting" noise coming from the rear when starting from a stop, reversing, or load application. They said that they needed to grease the input shaft which is what the .pdf is outlining. I will report back with what happens. I already have the FMBooster from a long time ago.
