Some of you may have gotten in on the deal last year when they had some old 2009 UTQG 140 stock to move out. Now there is another closeout going on to make room for what TR is calling the "Version 2".
Here's what I can confirm on the Hankook R-S3 as of today. The tread pattern and sidewall of the tire will remain the same, only the compound is being revised for improved wet and low temp traction. We (Tire Rack) will identify the tire as R-S3 Version 2. Since the sidewall and tire label will not change, the key identifier will be the four digit build date on the sidewall of the tire. Any R-S3's produced in 2014 (XX14) are Version 2 tires with the enhanced compound. 275/35ZR18 UTQG: 200 @ $205 each 285/35ZR18 UTQG: 140 @ $219 each With some competition rules now requiring higher UTQG Treadwear ratings, Hankook decided it was time to officially change the Ventus R-S3 Z222 line’s rating to accurately reflect its capabilities. Since 140- and 200-Treadwear rated tires are available*, both currently appear on NHTSA’s safercar.gov website for the Ventus R-S3 Z222 line. No changes were made to tire compound or construction, so all Ventus R-S3 Z222 tire sizes continue to use the same by-size Hankook S-Code (part number). Both 140- and 200-Treadwear-rated tires are compatible with each other when put into service as singles, pairs or in combination.

I guess the good news is they can't make the wet and cold traction any worse...
But interesting news. These have been around since 2009 unchanged! Yes, the UTOQ changed but that did not result in any meaningful change to the tire.

I would guess that it would expire when they run out of stock.

Thanks for the post. $18.50/tire shipping for me.
I'll call around to see if local tires shops are able to get them cheap too. . Quote:

Niiice. Just had a nightmare trying to get the 265/35/18. Discount tire said only 6 available in the CPU try last week. They had to re-direct the shipment out of GA to Austin so I can slap them on before COTA. He also admitted they ordered mine from Tirerack
looks like I'll be stocking up on these. Hopefully the 275/18 will fit upfront. Thanks for the info tlp ![]() |

Jealous.I'm moving from 265 RS3's upfront to 275. I don't anticipate any issues. You going to Chuckwalla this month with the CCA?

The compounds are identical and both tires have the same effective treadwear ratings. Hankook changed the label to be 200 sometime in 2013. My current 265/285 combo are labeled 200/140 as well. Nothing to be concerned about.

RS3 is similar to a Pilot Sport Cup tire. Fine on the street as long as it is not cold or wet. I use RS3's primary for track events and commuting to track events. I would not all season DD this tire.

I don't like the RS3 as much as the AD08. RS3 is really noisy for street driving yet doesn't possess the grip of a R-compound and only marginally more grip than the AD08. It also has softer sidewalls than the AD08. Overall AD08 is a better street/track tire than the RS3.
But then the RS3 is cheaper than the AD08 so I guess it has that going for it.

I haven't really looked at sizes, just the tires themselves. Both are available in OEM sizes for me.

They are noisy. They reduce fuel economy. They will wear quickly on the street. PSS is a superior tire to the RS3...except for dry grip.
