running off and sitting in the dry grass is no joke...my buddy burned his e30 to ground last year doing the same thing....he ran off stalled the car and for what ever reason it wouldnt restart 15 seconds later you could see the smoke them 5-7 sec after that you see the flames,,,, we are 99% sure it was the hot exhaust that was the cause... it was all caught on the interior gopro

I been going to the track for a verrrryyyyyy long time. Road racing and drag racing, etc. and I never heard of this..

And most of those Driver's meetings advising against pics are funny as there geared more towards the "street" cars and def not race cars. They do this for "protection" I believe and it smells a little fishy... (think insurance)

It is only "inevitable" when people choose to not extend some simple courtesy to a person who has suffered an unfortunate incident.

This courtesy is quietly mentored by almost every organization I drive with from CT to SC. If some organizations do not promote it - that is unfortunate.

There are organizations that do all manner of things (or not) at DEs. That doesn't make it right.

If someone choose to ignore extending that simple courtesy to another driver - its not as if you are breaking any law. But the people we meet at these events are people we see over and over and over again through the years. Many become friends. Refusing a courtesy to a guy who just lost his car seems a sad commentary to me.

People are free to act however their values direct them.

I realize there is little privacy anymore given the fact that every cell phone has a camera and internet access, but I don't need some clown taking pics of my wreck and posting on the internet. When I wrecked there were dudes coming over trying to take pics so I sat next to my car until it was towed away.

So you wouldn't care if you wrecked and some assclown posted it all over this forum? How about if someone got hurt? Different then? I don't think it's too much to ask for a little professional courtsey out there.

There is a big difference between posting photos of your own car, and posting of another persons car. It seems like common sense that you wouldn't broadcast someone elses misfortune. As others have said you see the same people week after week and are friends with a large majority.

My concern is twofold. First, I wouldn't want to read about my own crash on the internet, with people speculating and judging etc., becuase I felt like sh!t after it happened. Two, I'd be worried that, given the fact that I were going to make an insurance claim, a claims rep may get the wrong idea about the event, about what happened, etc. I want to be able to control that story. Don't think that insurance reps aren't looking at the formus, the club websites and the like because they are. When I made my claim all I had to say is I was at a BMW club HPDE. They went online and determined coverage based on the description of the event on the local chapters website. Luckily I was covered.

I would think that any car would be easily identifiable to the insurance company. For example, if they get a claim for a M3, just check the BMW forums for anything related to a crash of an M3 on the date of loss. Any additional description of the event in that thread could affect coverage. Just sayin. Before you post, just think about how it might affect the parties involved.

this is what I was inferring by saying to remove plates when at the track.

I work in the insurance industry and know the issues. I'm amazed people are getting coverage at all for HPDE at all (through reg insurance) as an exhibition of speed is excluded. It's a fine line as is.

Is taking off your plate going to help. If they find a picture of a car with fire damage in the same color with other indicators its the same car such as holes melted in the hood they will be able to figure it out. Just don't take photos of cars at the track at all. Simple.

yes, I am saying that in 2013 expect to see things like this. This is the internet golden age. I mean, damn, everyone takes pics of their food now for IG. I'm not condoning or commenting on the morality of anything, what I am saying is, accept it, when we walk around w/ 10 mp digital cams attached to phones everywhere.

Nobody is saying its not legal. But it is not ethically right to do. If you go to the track you would understand.

I've been going for quite a while myself. I have 18 days this year and no photos, except the first day with my new build e46. My own car! Being part of a public forum has no bearing on what you do at the track and the respect you give other drivers. Saying oh well people are assholes, I might as well be one too doesn't fly in my book.

I agree about the photography. I also agree, unless there is impact, or failure, no stopping. Once the car is at a stop, roll slowly up to the flag station (if there is one) or back on track (watching for traffic) no reason to stop completely unless there is impact. I tell my students all the time. "Two feet in". Car settles, are you ok, then lets slowly get back on track. This is a shame.

Did anyone find out root cause. Must have been a leak of some kind, somewhere. Grass catching fire causing that kind of damage? I don't think so. Possible fluid leak on brakes or injectors?
