Nice to hear how reliable these things are for others. I have a 2013 DCT with about 11k and 5 track days, no issues so far..... hope to get many more years out of it.
Wasn't sure I'd like the DCT but said what the hell and I love it so far. On the track it's pretty damn awesome. |

1. 50k
2. Fluid just changed. 3. Had to fix a oil leak by replacing the oil pan. Had a transmission failure light came on at 50k. Mechanic couldn't duplicate any problem after checking the whole transmission |

As someone looking to buy a DCT M3 in the spring, this thread makes me so happy
100k + on an engine doesn't scare me but I heard the stories about high mileage SMG cars and after falling in love with the DCT M3, I was worried that they might have similar issues in the higher mileage cars (which to me is over 80k at this point in time for these cars)

38K on DCT.
At around 7K miles, 1 year after ownership, there was a blue fluid leak under the car which wasn't to significant probably 5cm diameter circle. But apparently it caused enough of an alarm at BMW Calgary that they had to replace the whole transmission. They then replaced it and installed a new tranny, but upon driving it I could tell something was not write the moment I was accelerating from a stop. 20kms after that, they replaced it a second time and it's been bullet proof ever since. About 3 years after that incident, the new transmission has had 28K on it, without a problem.

I'm really open to the idea of the DCT when I get my M3. Reliability is extremely important with me but at the same time, I like modding my cars. I'm not into FI, but I do want to get an exhaust, intakes and a tune, just NA goodness. Is there a power threshold that the DCT is prone to failure?
Also, is the software upgrade covered under warranty? If not, how much would BMW typically charge for this service? My only fear with the DCT is that it's pretty technological and advanced. Technology is always changing, so 5-7 years down the line, will BMW still do software updates on these transmissions? I like the security of manual transmissions...easy design that never changes and is easy enough to repair, but then again, you run into synchro and clutch issues. Nevertheless, I'll be testing out a few DCTs shortly. |

Nope. ESS 650 plus other stuff.....
Car past warranty. Repairs guaranteed for 2 years, unlimited mileage, by BMW. Lost all of August waiting for parts and then repairs! edit: forgot to add - According to the BMW dealership the mod's did not have anything to do with the parts that failed. That why the guarantee... |

Dual-clutch transmissions have proven themselves reliability-wise on many cars. I have no worries about it over any other transmission.

2. No 3. Yes, 49900 (fixed at that mileage, started noticing issue 35-40k). 4. Issue with clutches, BMW replaced the entire transmission under warranty due to new clutch packs being on backorder for months. http://www.m3post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=741007
