WWLWD?? Just got some news from Blackstone

UPDATE 10/20/13:

Here is my new oil lab report from Blackstone with oil changed at 4,000 miles since the previous report. It looks like my lead levels went down with the lower interval between oil changes. Let's see what it will be like on my next oil report using Mobil 1 0W40.

I just received my first oil report from Blackstone and it does not look so good for my bearings. I bought my car at 58K miles on it as basically a car that has been stock all its life. Within 200 miles of owning the car I supercharged it with a G-Power SKII and the car currently has 72K miles on it. I have taken it to two track day events and one 1/2 mile event since the then. I have read basically all of the posts recently about bearings from all the pros and longwong's and am a little worried. I have attached my Blackstone report (seems like they put the wrong engine for the universal values and I have requested for an update). So my question is WHAT WOULD LONGWONG DO?

This is the second or third report I've seen with S54 when it should be S65. Attention to details is very important regardless of the outcome.

I have seen other members post with the wrong engine too. I hope that the data they are collecting is not flawed as well.

+ 1 the universal values on this report are for the S-54 engine 3.2 l 6 cyl. and not for our S-65 engine, so this report is wrong .
I would wait for the correct report and make than the conclusion of the results,and in the main time....no red line,no risk!
And when you see that the report is still bad with our S-65 engine, than do another oil analyse after 2-3 K miles....still bad >>> than change bearings for sure !

I was very specific, beyond what they asked for, on the info sheet. Noted that it was the S65 engine and supercharged so they or we can start comparing SC to NA and develop trends and differences.

I don't think there is a need for comparison. What we need to know is what's in our oil and if levels are high is it acceptable. What's universal and who governs it is subjective.

As the owner, one should be comfortable with the analysis report. When I sent my oil for analysis here in Australia, the company had never tested 10w-60, so they said in the report the viscosity at 100c was high. But when I checked against the Castrol whitepaper it was just under.

But for me what was more important was, the metal wear the oil had absorbed. At 39k km, I had 2 ppm of lead. I am comfortable with that. Also with this oil, only 4k km and nine months, I did a track event, and a lot of short trips.

I will push out the next oil change to December '14, and also try and do more km as possible to see the wear pattern. To me, my oil analysis is a more important than universal comparison. Oil labs are not engine experts. They are just interpreting the data from testing machines to us. Simple.

If the levels were high, then I would have raised my concerns with BMW. I am preparing a dossier on engine issues from this board, and if and when my lead count goes up, and I am not happy, I will have a case to raise with BMW Australia.

Actually I don't think it looks that bad. You did several track events and this could affect it.

FWIW, I compiled 35 Blackstone Lab tests that I have found online. Here are the current averages of what i've found (which are higher than Blackstone's own universal averages):

Aluminum: 5
Iron: 12
Copper: 6
Lead: 13


You're right in there with the online averages but a tick higher on lead. FWIW out of the 35 analysis', 10 of them had a higher lead count than you.

Not sure if that makes you feel any better...

I'm going to keep testing mine on every oil change from here on out to see if numbers start changing. It would also be nice to see a sample followed by an immediate bearing change. That way we can see what numbers actually look like on the bearings.

I may be able to provide this. It would be on an e46 m3. I'm planning rod bearings this off season but may need oil change between now and then. If timing works could see a before and after sample as well as what my bearings actually look like wear-wise.

Not sure if that makes you feel any better...

It will be interesting to see what the average is for a particular mileage range. That will shed some light rather than looking at an overall average. I might do this some time today if time permitting.

I have been getting quotes to replace my rod bearings. I am thinking of doing it soon since my miles are getting up there. I will be able to get another lab report before the bearing swap and then do another report after the bearing swap.

Hmm... Are you considering getting your bearings replaced? What level would you consider it?

I am considering it. I am going to my third oil analysis as soon as my oil comes in. I will make the determination then. Most likely, I will be doing it relatively soon.
