New Owner: Which insurer for young driver
Hi all,
i just paid a deposit on a 2010 Alpine White E92 with a real gearbox. Iam now on the hunt for an insurer and despite my 100% blemish free driving record nobody decent will insure me. (Iam 25) AAMI at this stage are the only ones who'll insure me and as we know if something were to happen they'd be race taping taiwanese ebay parts together to get it back on the road. I read that there are several younger members on here so who are you guys using to insure your E92s? Thanks |

I am 42 but I also with AAMI. Had claims in the past, not the M3 but other cars and house but no issues at all. They have been good to me. I did insure for agreed value on the M3.

AAMI will try and send you to a local body shop for repairs. You should stay firm and tell them that if something goes wrong with the car in relation to the particular repair that they will be liable for it. You must insist on taking to your preferred BMW repair shop. A guy in Perth who was insured with AAMI was asked to go to a non-BMW approved body shop. He wrote a letter outlining the above, and AAMI quickly asked him to take it to where ever he desired, and they would take care of it. All insurance companies try this. You have the right and the option to take it to your preferred repairer. You pay the premium so you have the right to choose.

I'm with AAMI too. Haven't had a claim with my M3, but on my 135 they would only send it to BMW approved repairers

Thanks for your replies. It is as much as having the flexibility to choose your repairer as it is their obligation to use OEM parts. And by all accounts, AAMI have no obligation to do either.
I will try a broker but the price will still be astronomical Iam sure. If AAMI were smart, they'd give rev heads the ability to choose their own repairer (gold tier or similar) for an additional cost... Instead people jam on the accelerator in an accident to make AAMI's affiliated dodgies can't get their hands on a slide hammer. As people have said, they have a stinky reputation for a reason. |

There will be bad experiences with every insurer, but AAMI have been great to deal with myself, all brand new OEM parts used at a BMW approved repairer (in fact the one in my dealership), and they are happy to insure all of my mods too (Supercharger, suspension, wheels etc etc).

Are insurers no longer writing policies for younger drivers with expensive cars, or is it your location? NRMA, Suncorp and BMW/Allianz worked for me in the past on $ cars. You could also try coles/wesfarmers. I've relocated many times for work and each time, my policies fluctuated. Moving from one western suburb to another a few km's away sent my premium from $950 to $1550

it is not the $ necessarily but as an insurance guy explained to me M3's have a bad rep for being stolen, thrashed and crashed. Atleast the E46's did and as such insurance companies are very wary of insuring <30's for them.
I had a brand new Range Rover sport (higher value than a 2010 e92) and Allianz had no dramas insuring me for $1200k premium. I live in a good suburb in Brisbane so not the area either. |

Shannons are owned by Suncorp and will insure modified cars and allow you to choose the repairer, but are expensive. likewise Just Cars are owned by Suncorp and are for young drivers but have insane excesses. Coles/Westfarmers are good unless you mod the car but you need to have a reasonable premium for them to match NRMA are now too expensive Suncorp are great but won't insure Supercharger mods It's always a good idea to go to the Body Shop who you want would repair your car and ask them, they know who knocks down the claims or pays them, or looks for outs. I use Motorline body shop in Brisbane and they are really good. They like Suncorp and say they can't deal with AAMI, I've never had any experience with AAMI but Michael has. |

That's great advice DaveDee thankyou. Have been wanting the details of a good body shop in brizzy too so you've killed two birds with one stone.
I found a broker this morning who will do a good deal with QBE as underwriter with total choice of repairer. Thanks all for your comments |

Yes, they are really good, Gerry Reverty runs the bodyshop there. I ususally take mine there on a yearly basis to remove any stone chips or minor blemishes and they have never failed to satisfy. If you are in a bingle you know the parts are genuine too. |

I am 26 with AAMI too.
I figured if I happen to be involved in an accident the most important thing to me is that everyone comes out of it unharmed. The rest is all arguably important. AAMI were friendly enough to offer a better competitively priced insurance hence my choice to select them. Having said that like aussiem3 mentioned, my experience with insurers was that they are all flexible to the effect of your communication to them. In other words, in a case of an accident express your desired method of fixing to them and then address the point appropriately in a case should they chose not to accommodate. PS. DaveDee is 100% correct. BMW only act as a bridge to get to Allianz. Allianz is great but sadly wasn't interested in insuring directly. |

I'm sorry but AAMI is tight ass insurance!! You don't have choice of repairer AAMI have there own shops and look to cut cost in a big way. These are people I would use Allianz, CGU, calliden, lumley special vehicles, MB insurance group, QBE and Shannons |

Both my M3 and the missus' modded mk6 gti are with NRMA. I'm 25 and she's 24. They're the cheapest and they don't require you to list any modifications.
