S65 Carbon Airbox

Ok, so I'm obsessed with Intakes especially the sound these ITBs make. The E46 M3 CSL Airbox is probably one of the nicest sounding intakes I've heard.

I'm not concerned with HP gains as long as there's no losses. Not that I can feel the 5hp gain or see a remarkable decrease in measureable 1/4mile times. This is purely a sound exercise.

Managed to find a few vendors that sells enlarged CF Airbox. Some of these Airbox are simply a larger CF version of the of the stock airbox with an apparently increase in intake sound. The Motorsport24 Race Box is probably a no go as too many ancillaries has to be relocated.

Anyone pulled the trigger on any of these airbox so far ? Feedbacks ?

Alpha N is developing a carbon airbox for the S65. It should be ready soon. I am also interested in the results and performance gains. Here are sum pics:

Very wicked looking Airbox !

But I seriously hope the filters have some form of Air Filter box for fresh air to channel in as it looks to be very close to the exhaust manifold.

I suppose they could utilise OEM Air Intake tract on the Drivers side (LHD). I'm not so sure where the air will be channel to for the passenger side.

The company already makes carbon airboxes for other models and the quality is very good. As you said the the hot air from the engine might be an issue. I am also interested to see the results. As far as I know there will be dyno runs and also street testing before the box goes into sales. I have spoken with one of the guys, who is working on the project and he said that they will change it if it needs to be changed.

most of those are just a stock air box with carbon on the top. for the sound you are after get something full carbon

Got this email from them its going to run you a pretty penny tho. "This project was in "sleep mode" for a while, we had to much going on so we didn't do what we wanted to do so far. We made some small design updates to the product, what required complete new molding, and we planned the development of a complementary (optional) carbon hood, so the intake can breathe trough 2 openings in the hood for optimal fresh ram air, as well trough the grill.

Pricing is 4280,- Euro at the moment for the intake including complementary remap, and we expect to have first product out of production at the beginning of December. To install the remap yourself, you will need our iMoss flash tool as well (+159,- Euro). For the optional hood I cannot give you any details at the moment, since the development is in it's first stage.

If you are interested, we can put you on our reservation list for this product already, since we expect a waiting list after the update is released. Thanks for your request, and we hope to hear from you!- it's made by Mosselman

I think the Top bit is CF, the bottom half is probably plastic.

I'm guessing here that the top and bottom intake plenum is connected via 2 bolts.

I haven't been able to find any OEM looking airbox that is purely CF yet. The only 100% CF (except for trumpet ducts) I've seen so far are E46 M3 CSL airbox but engine layout is obviously different.

Thanks for the info.

I'm hoping that this can be a straight bolt on but without an actual airbox that can be seen, I'm not sure if it is worth waiting that long assuming they do come out of hibernation mode.

We have to complete. Digitized engine compartment and with CFD Calculated .. The calculation of the airbox / intake trumpet, etc. was done with GT-suite.
We had no major problems to warm air.
If it is found during the test, the air is too warm is optimized.
Next week we go to the dynamometer. We first test the 3 different velocity stacks.

Looking good though I'm very concern about the air filters being that close to the exhaust manifold.

But I'm also seeing that the Coolant and Power Steering Reservoir seems to be relocated. I'm quite concerned that this is no longer a straight bolt on job.

We offer two different versions of S65 CFK air intake systems. The one you talk about is our "race" version which requires a lot of modifications. That's correct.

But we have also created a "clubsport" version for trackday cars. It's not just an airbox, it's more a complete 6-piece CFK air intake system with optimized air flow, beginning with an air duct in the front bumper. As you all know the S65 has thermic problems on the race track. Therefore it was very important to create a system which works with fresh, cold air as useful as possible.

Do you have plans to shield off the air filters from the hot 250*F+ radiator wash? Open air elements in the engine bay can yield HP gains with the hood open on the dyno, but severely increase Intake Air Temps in practical use with the hood closed.

is it possible to have a comparison between stock air box only, i.e. without the headers and cams?

Have you been able to measure air pressure, air flow and intake temperature? And how do these compare to stock?

What is the logic in not utilising the centre snorkel of the stock set up to provide more air? I've seen AM Speed run this on their racing M3.

Currently we are testing the air box and the different velocity stacks on the street and on the Nürburgring. And we have no thermal problems !!!

Where is the air coming from? Do you have a pic of the setup you are using and do you log air intake temps for the stock and your air box?

Here we have the latest solution for maximum and direct air intake for the S65 engine in standard position. Our race airbox system requires to change the cooler position and to remove the air condition as well as the power steering.

The increase is around 50 hp (with software).
