This is a GREAT thread .... Since I am SC'd I am obviously concerned about this. My car has less than 7K miles on it and I tracked it once so far. Based on everything I have read I think I am going to run M1 OW-40 normally and then go back to TWS 10W-60 for track days. Seems like the best option without changing the clearances right now.

Yea not a bad idea at all. I plan on changing my oil in the next couple of weekends, especially now that the weather is cooling down. My 12ish miles commute this morning, in 70 degrees weather, my M didn't oil temp didn't even reach 210.

We went to dinner last night and it was about 68 degrees. Oil temp was 185 and water was 170 on the interstate cruising at 80.

Maybe it's time to tape some cardboard on the kidney grilles!

Compared to 10W-60, have you noticed if the 0W-40 warms up significantly faster? Or not really?

I guess one good thing about the SC in relation to heating up the oil is that it appears (based on the OEM gauge) that oil temps run 10-15 degrees higher all the time than when my motor was NA.

Seems like it warms to 175ish faster for sure. Usually when I leave my house I have to get all the way to the interstate before it is hot. (5 miles)
It is up to temp probably a mile sooner with the 0-40. Not a huge difference but everything helps. One thing I have noticed since installing the gauges is how cool the water temp is on this car under normal conditions. It is constantly 165-175 while moving. I know that is a different topic but just a observation.

Good to know, thanks. The problem with my commute is that it's mostly rural followed by highway. Very little time stopped at a red light.

In the middle of the winter, that gauge is almost impossible to get to 210 haha. But at least Mobil1 will help. Looking forward to not pay ///M taxes on 10W60 anymore!

That's potentially a lot of oil... BTW, what happened to our E90?

Or just use M1 0w50 race oil or Torco 5w50 than no need to change the oil. 0w40 is still a whopping mistake if you ask me. Unless you granny drive your m3 than almost any oil is fine but if you drive the thing hard and take it to redline, I would cringe at 0w40 being in the engine.

Also looks like 10w60 does not shear down to a 50
