Took a Porsche 911 out today, God I love my M3
I took out a collegues Porsche 911 today.
Nice car, but God I love my M3. Even in stock form the M3 felt more responsive. But with the supercharger on the M3 it was night and day. The M3 just felt so much more reponsive in all aspects. When my collegue took my car out, his jaw just dropped. My advice, if your thinking of trading your M3 for a Porsche 911/911S, just supercharge your car. You wont be disappointed!

Which 911 did you drive? From what I've heard from all the owners and test drives, the 911S is on another level. One of the reasons I refuse to test drive them.

I second that. in 2010 I testdrove a Porsche 4S. I wanted to like it and be impressed but the opposite happened. It stirred no passion in me and driving it felt not special at all. Just to be sure I also had the porsche dealer salesman who is a consumed racing driver drive it for me too. It was just okay but I am glad I did this because I had no doubt after that the M3 is the better car. I think you need to be in better Porsche (GT3, or Turbo) to surpass the M3. Certainly not a S or 4S will do.

I think there's going to be a big difference between the AWD and RWD version. I have no interest in AWD cars except for winter trips to the snow.

I was thinking of going the 911 route next, not a chance now. As for FI, my car is much more responsive with the ESS VT1. Including the drive by wire throttle mapping, I found my car had a "lazy" throttle pedal in stock form. Can't compliment ESS enough on the performance of the kit.

But in terms of $/performance, I am not convinced that there's a better deal than a FI E9X M3.

Don't get me wrong, I'm a huge Porsche fanatic. The 991 sounded incredible considering it was stock and it was very fast, especially since it had PDK. I wasn't completely blown away with it though. Sure it beautiful in and out, made the right noises ect... but it wasn't an Oh my God take my money now moment. Not to mention the price tag on the one I drove was $119k. I was more impressed with Boxster to be honest. Now that is an insanely fun car to drive. I left the dealership feeling very good about my NA Stg2 M3. Having said that, I will want to add a 997 Turbo one day. My dream car and I want to turn it into a GT-R-ish experience with a lot of boost. In the meantime, I'm still as happy with my M3 as ever. I was very surprised.

Thanks OP for your input.
Each car has its attributes but I agree adding a SC to my M3 made it a whole new love affair!

There's always going to be a different opinion on this subject. Just like some people prefer AWD or even FWD at the track (though those people are weird too). But anyone who says FI makes the M3 much more fun at the track is either a really bad driver, or a really good one.

I drove a 997S, 4S, and Cayman S before choosing my M3 in 2011. The M3 just felt like the better overall car. I just recently drove a 991S. It is definitely more capable than the M3. That said, it cost $120k and wasn't even as well equipped as my fairly loaded M3, which stickered for $74k. What is impressive, then, is how much the M3 offers for what it costs. You have to spend A LOT more to get just a little better. The M3 really sits in the sweet spot of performance car ownership.

Similar to the M3, you have learn how to drive the Carrera properly in order see the return in performance. That is why so many people find the boxer "funner" to drive compared to the 911.
But when you understand the 911 and learn to drive it differently than your M3, you will be amazed. Having said that, I have to agree with LarThaL, the M3 is a lot of car for the money even though the sticker price was $92K CAD
