Review: DC Metro Coding Feature Coding & 240E DME Software Update
This morning I had the pleasure of meeting with John from DC Metro Coding to provide me the latest 240E software update and feature coding and for my E90 M3.
Johns business is mobile and he promptly arrived as discussed. He began to explain the entire process of what features were available and how he planned to upgrade my car. I finally decided on the following options: 240E DME Upgrade EURO MDM Enabled Close windows and sunroof with key fob Fold/Unfold mirrors when locking doors Auto unlock of doors when engine is stopped Disabled seatbelt chime Disabled iDrive Accept screen Disabled amber corner lights One touch blinker count set to 4 blinks Return of wipers to home position when engine is shut off Setting low fuel warning to 1/8 of a tank Enabled real time MPG on gauge cluster John really impressed me with his technical knowledge and all of the hardware and software required for the updates. He started off by connecting my battery to a huge power supply. Then he connected his laptop into my cars OBD port to begin the feature programming. Once again he verified all of the settings before he made any changes to the car. After this was complete he moved on to the DME update. According to John, my car was running 80E, which was one of the original DME versions, and he was upgrading it up to 240E. With his software he could tell that my car had never been flashed before and I was looking forward to all of the improvements that I have read about online. John was finished in about 1 ½ hours, but I was so excited time flew by. Once he was finished he verified all of the new features with me and everything worked without any errors. Since he did the 240E update he suggested that we take the car on a test drive. When I fired the car up it felt like it had a more aggressive/refined tone on cold start. The idle also seemed to smooth out a bit and I instantly felt the difference in throttle sensitivity. Although BMW claims no difference in HP, the car feels like it has been now tuned. It pulls harder and faster in each gear (6 M/T) and I was quickly tearing up the back roads. I drove the car later on again today and it still feels and pulls stronger than before. I am blown away at just how little feature changes make a big difference in daily driving convenience. Once again a big thanks to John as I have fallen in love with my car again! Its a great feeling to know that a BMW enthusiast is working on your vehicle. I highly recommend his services.

Awesome! I might do the same in the near future! I have an 08 and I don't think my car has ever been flashed

Great review. John coded 240e and dct update on mine on saturday. Exactly what you described. the car wakes up after 2k a tad more aggressive than before. some of the jerky-ness at lower speed are now gone. the induction noise is different. awesome investment overall

throttle is more sensitive? I'm not sure if that's a good thing...I usually drive on "Normal" power setting b/c I didn't like the sensitive throttle for a DD.

I have a light foot. It took a few weeks to get use to get used to the M3's sensitivity when I first bought it. Even after leaving John's place, I realize that something has change cuz I have to re adapt to the new throttle response, my foot and the car was not in sync. It was fine after an hour or so. I DD my dct on d-3 through baltimore. Can tell the difference but its not that bad. It just feels like d-4. You get used to it like everything else

John just updated my car on Saturday.
Thus far, I've noticed 2 differences: 1. throttle sensitivity in 1st and 2nd gears are now less sensitive. The car is less jerky and much easier to drive at parking lot speeds. I have a 6MT. Across the rev range in other gears, power delivery is smoother and less jerky. There's also less buckling as you let off the gas at mid-high RPM ranges. 2. I am getting better highway mpgs (by about 2 mpg), so I'll keep my eye on long term differences, but this is what I observed off the bat, but consistent with smoother/less sensitive throttle response. I cannot feel any HP bump, or more sensitive throttle as others have indicated. All my observations has been consistent with lower throttle sensitivity. Overall, this update is worth it to me as I'm keeping my car for the long term. Low speed drivability is very usable and the smoother power delivery is also a plus. |

John worked his magic and squeezed me in for a 240E update and LCI retrofit coding on Christmas Eve. Really great guy and I look forward to meeting with him again in the near future. After the update, the car does seem more responsive and a lot smoother when driving at low speed. It's only been a day or so, but I'm sure there are probably some other things as well. I'll be driving it down South (approx 1700+ miles round trip) and will be anxious to see if it does improve my mpg.

What's the cost?
I'm just curious - I just had a buddy code my car for free. He taught me the ins and outs of making general changes to the car. What we've done so far: Corner light delete Enabled DVD in motion Eliminate 'Accept' screen on start up Windows up and down with key FOB and Comfort Access Fold and unfold mirrors with key FOB and Comfort Access Headlight washers off Wipers complete cycle with car off Disable seatbelt warning ...

Does this have any affect on obdii emissions testing?
Also some say there is a slight bump of power while others say it is just a change in throttle response. Which is it? Combination of both? |

check out his website by googling or searching facebook for the first part of the title of this thread. you can't copy/paste websites here anymore since I assume he's not a paid bimmerpost sponsor.
he's very active on facebook if you want to see samples of his work

I saw on FB Bimmer Alliance that a new guy is coding in the NoVA area.
I had DC Metro Coding do 240E for me. Feature coding I did myself; there is a significant learning curve IMO. |
