How many years do M3s reasonably last without much trouble?
Hi Folks,
Looked for this on the forums, and did not find an equivalent thread, so I am posting. What is the average lifetime of an M3 if I purchase one new? That is, how many years before it is wiser to sell the car than keep up with maintenance? Please share your experiences. I am close to pulling the trigger on a 2012 ... |

There are threads on this topic. The E9x M3 is the most reliable car BMW currently makes. The E9x 328i was also but is now retired. I don't know what that says about a car that's only a 5 year old design. There are people with 100k mile M3's with little or no problems. I believe one individual on this board and one on another have 100k miles. There are many in the 50k to 80k mile range. The most common issue and they are few seems to be the Idle Control Valve and O2 sensors. I also recollect that a few early builds may have had some engine baring issues. Not sure. Other than those minimal issues these cars seem to be reliable but ultimately time will be the determining factor. Good luck.

Now your car if a 2012 will be 4 years looked after by the dealer. Then you can purchase extended warranty including maintenance. In the end it all depends how you treat and drive your car my friend ... so very difficult to answer your question. Keep in mind the M3 like other BMW's are designed and build for the Autobahn for high speeds. The M3 is so to speak the top of the line (as you properly know) Designers and Engineers start out with a ordinary 3 Series then change and upgrade about 50% of the parts and up to 80% of the components are modified to qualify for the Motorsport ///M3 requirements. So treat her right follow the maintenance and you have many years of fun.

^ Alter Peter: That's a "Beauty" - I just love the E28 body style.
OP: I plan on keeping mine awhile since the E9X M3 has a good reputation but I also plan on following Mike Miller's Old School Maintenance Program.

Nice e28. Congrats and many more miles to come.
OP - Really? I'm thinking a Camry may be a better choice.

That's what I did.. That said, I didn't really want to let her go, being that she only had 13K miles on it, but I needed a bigger car or a sedan (Got a C63) Fantastic car... no complaints, however, after getting into my C63, I never looked back! The "torque" on it is out of this world... Test drive one.. I dare u to hahahaha good luck~ |

Thanks Fellows,
the car has great sentimental value ... I just completed in 2011 restoring the exterior last year (both front fenders and both front and rear bumpers ordered/imported from Germany). This year the interior gets a make over. The car is all stock from head to toe. Someone keyed this car in 2000 all around not missing a spot. It was then re-painted using original factory paint. The car crossed North America several times, in both directions

Based on my 2001 e46 330 experience, I got 80k miles trouble free in 8 years of driving (oil changes, tires, a set of f/r brake pads). However, the next 2 years yielded in replacement of a couple of engine sensors, gaskets, a window regulator, a radiator hose, a xenon ballast, and oem battery. By 95k miles, I knew there were bigger expenses up ahead, hence I sold the car. I would have to say, I did pamper the car, occasionally had fun with it and drove it in Minnesota winters. I would also say, I have never experienced any other car so smooth and rattle free after 10 years and 95k miles of service.
Based on this experience I intend on driving the M till 10 years or 80k miles, which ever comes first. Hope this helps. |

A long time, but it won't be cheap if you don't have a warranty. Probably around 150k before it slightly starts to lose its charm...

IMO, I think there will be a period between 100k-150k that will be maintenance hell unless you've maintained the car to older standards (i.e. no lifetime fills).
M3s in general seem to last a long time and have far fewer issues than their non-M counterparts. The M3s most common issue is the clod behind the wheel.

I just traded my 2005 E46 M3 in for a 2011 E90. At trade time, the 2005 M3 had 98,000 miles on it - I bought it in 2008 as a CPO car with about 43,000 miles showing. Bottom line - when I traded it, the car was 7 years old, and the only thing I did was have the alternator rebuilt ($75.00 to the electric shop, I did the labor.) Other than that, I had no problems with the car at all.
