Some Examples for the codes:
OE [Vehicle Manufacturer] Sidewall Marking:
* = BMW,
C1 = Dodge,
K1 & K2 = Ferrari,
MO & MO1= Mercedes-Benz,
N0, N1, N2,N3 & N4 = Porsche,
AO& R01 = Audi,
TPC= Cadillac and Chevrolet

OE Code [Original Equipment Key]:
AC =Acura,
AU = Audi,
BM = BMW,
DC = DaimlerChrysler,
FER = Ferrari,
GM = GM,
L = Lexus,
M = Maserati,
MB = Mercedes-Benz,
P = Porsche

ZP = Zero Pressure Run-FlatTechnology

Regarding lease, my dealer does not care which tires are on the car when I give it back.
Thanks for the info

Never leased before but want to...so stupid question.

Do you have to return the leased car with the same OE brand/model tires that have this star designation?

No, tires are a consumable part. No one ever cared which tires are mounted when my cars goes back. So important is just the amount of tire pattern left on the tire and that the car goes back with the same size of tires and on the rims which are originally delivered. I never bought star-rating tires for my lease cars after the first set was used up. My 330i E91 was delivered with 17" summer tires and goes back with 17" winter tires. The dealer told me it is ok. He bought my 19" 225 rims with the summer tires from me also.

But I can just speak for Germany, perhaps there is a diferent situation in other countries. If there are doubts, just look into the contract. If it is explicitly mentioned, then you have to do it, if not, then not.
