Unintended fun

So I am driving back to my office today, and some clown in a Dodge duelly cuts me off, just so he is in front of me. I didnt appreciate that so I caught up with him, and as we took a corner my rear end just released and I basically drifted around the corner until I corrected. Dry roads and about 55 degrees. The car and tires were still pretty cold probably. My Michelin PS2's have good rubber still. Is there a recommended tire warm up criteria I am not aware of?

Street tires don't really need to be warmed up that much, if you had driven a few miles and braked/turned a bit, I suspect it was more that patch of road that was slippery than the tires being cold...

It's not hard to drift this car, but it doesn't usually just step out hugely without an intentional prod of the throttle to get it going.

Yes. Traction Control Off. (6mt) Rev to 5k and drop clutch. (DCT) Brakes and floor it and let off brakes.

You've described something we experience in the Northern climes every year about this time. Summer tires generally don't warm-up when outside temps go to about 40 degrees or below. It's fun , and sometimes a surprise to get the backend to slide out so easily. This is one of the reasons winter tires are called for if we're going to keep the car on the road during the 4-5 months of winter.

I find it almost impossible to drift a corner with DSC on. And actually rather difficult with MDM as well. DSC has to be completely off to truly drift a corner.

+1.......its why you need snow tires before the snow comes. Even if it never snows, high-performance summer tires never do well in colder whether, even if its dry out.

Yes, it can be LOTS of gun......but also can sap some fun away as you can't push the car quite as hard as during the warmer months

Oh, and we are getting snow in the northeast this weekend, yes, snow BEFORE Halloween, with the summer tires on.........LET THE GOOD TIMES ROLL

Summer tires in 55 degree weather....You're driving on 4 hockey pucks.

If you had DSC on then I am wondering what happened... When I am feeling spirited I'll usually put MDM on in the streets (had a bad experience with DSC off on a public road, no damage just a scare, lol). With MDM I can get it to push out a little, but not enough to scare me or make me have to make any major corrections.

You can powerslide the car with DSC on, especially if you are off the throttle.

It's not really a drift per se, but if you turn the wheel enough the car will get a little sideways when sliding like this and force you to correct (which does require you to get back on the throttle, yes). This could be what the OP did.
