New Castrol 10w60 oil approved for the M engines

It seems that Castrol are now branding their 10w60 TWS oil as Edge Professional TWS 10w60.

There is no reference to it being approved for M engines on the bottle any more, but I am assured by Castrol Tech dept that it's the newest version of TWS and definitely still approved for the M engines.

I bought mine straight from the dealers and you can see the omission of the 'Approved for M series engines'

The old dealer supplied TWS on the left, the new dealer supplied TWS on the right

So now the age old question of which oil for my M gets even more confusing for newcomers. Or perhaps not!

Maybe Castrol are planning to roll both the edge and TWS names into one name in the future, being Edge Professional TWS?

We have the approved oils: (apparently these oils have 3 times the shear strength as the non approved Edge Sport)

Castrol Edge 10w60
Castrol TWS Motorsport 10w60
Castrol Edge Professional TWS 10w60

None approved Castrol oil

Castrol 10w60 Edge Sport

My guess is they're one and the same. But if not, they need to differentiate them. Are all group IV?

Label (for the Professional) clearly says 'approved for BMW M engines'. But if you still can't find any of them at regular auto parts stores, there's nothing to get excited about IMO.

Not sure what the situation is in the US, but in the UK we have two oils that were recommended for M models. The Edge variant can be bought at regular vendors and the TWS can be bought from the dealers. They are both exactly the same oil.

The newer SM pec Professional Edge TWS blend looks like a way of giving both outlets the same branding with less confusion.

What the difference is with the new stuff, I have no idea

Old rumor was that TWS from dealerships is an ester base whereas the retail TWS is PAO base.

i think they are using the new name as a scam to stop people bringing their own oil to services.

I bought my oil Castrol Edge 10w-60 SN through a normal retailer when I realised BMW Australia don't have access Castrol TWS 10w-60 anymore. Labelling depends from country to country. BMW Australia and its dealers are using Castrol Edge 10w-60 SN and charging a premium when you can buy the say at Auto 1, Repco and Supercheap Auto. I paid $175 for 10 litres. The dealer charges between $210-225 for 10 lites.

I can do my DIY oil change for $200 including oil filter instead of paying the stealer $450. It took for an hour the first time I changed the oil. It's a good experience to see how things come together in your pride and joy!

Castrol Australia have its own website:

I bought my oil locally in Australia. You have mistaken the above for the post below.

The oil is a lot dearer at the dealership - 30% mark up - and to add to that is the $192 + GST for an hour's oil service in addition to charging for all the consumables.

it should only cost about $13.50 per bottle, but have seen it up to $20 a bottle.
