Mine had those too.
Supposedly debris embedded into the bearing or something like that. It was odd as heck to look at under magnification.

The spots are said to be contaminants getting into the oil, making their way into the bearings, and getting smashed. Speculated to be from aftermarket filters.
i have had two aftermarket filters (both oiled). MS drop-in with my oem neck/box, and AFE carbon.

roastbeef Those don't look that bad to me, but who knows? lol. Stuff is like reading tea leaves.
Getting my battery cable recall work done tomorrow. Don't want to have my car shut down on me randomly at the track!

Keep in mind, I'm a 2011. These don't have copper. They are all almost down to the 2nd layer consistently across the board, and pretty much all of the little oil ridges are worn smooth.

In this state, the bearings could last indefinitely depending on the use, but they are more likely to fail if loaded in such a way that would typically cause wear. And they've already experienced a significant amount of wear, so those conditions have occurred at some point during this engine's operation. For an s65, my opinion is they're average. Which is terrible. |

I posted a much more detailed observation surrounding my cars maintenance history and driving habits in the maintenance forum.

Nope. Stock filter and airbox.
My nose has been modified for better airflow though. Not cosmetic surgery as I can't afford all the work that would be required!

Had it roto-routered when I had a tonsillectomy at age 41. Now you have moved from a car nose to a human nose. Now you nose what I was talking about...

I just had a long talk with Andy at cobalt friction about brake pads and rotors. What a knowledgeable guy.
I'm cutting it kind of close as for rotor life/health and I sort of need new rotors for next week's track days at Sonoma and Laguna...

Cobalt Friction doesn't market much, so they're not as well known in the HPDE world, but they make very good pads, and have done very well in the racing world. Years ago, a racer who was also a mechanic told me about Cobalt pads----said they worked great and were easy on the rotors. I tried them. He was right. |
