New 10w60 default oil from BMW. No more Castrol

Well that didn't take long. I'd love to see the look on the faces of those BMW nuthuggers who kept assuring us that the S65 engine and the TWS were specifically designed for each other, and that any use of non-approved oil will blow up the engine.

It's not about the brand moreso the weight. 1060 is a unique weight of oil. Oil (weight) and bearings (clearances) go hand in hand

No, it's not that. It's more the fact that some BMW apologists were claiming that the TWS was "specifically designed" for M engines. It wasn't just an issue of viscosity. They were claiming that the TWS specifically, out of all 10w60 oils out there, was custom made for the M engines.

Whats up with the poseur label?

Everyone remembers the S38, S54, S62, S65, S85 as using 10w60 but these are all NA.

Which turbo engines is this label trying to hint at?
The S63 and S55 use 5w30 & 0w30

10W60 is much more common that you think it is.

But i can understand peoples concern though. Especially with a major issue like rod bearings lurking in the back of your mind. Switch oils, then BOOM! But this is it for me, i'm making the switch to Liqui Moly like what i did on my prior M3's.

In defense of the exhaust system, the M3 Akra Evo has more than twice the amount of material of equivalent Mini/VW systems. Titanium is also more than twice the cost of stainless steel, and the manufacturing process is more expensive.

I don't disagree on the oil markup though.

We also don't know what specific additives are added to make up TWS or Shell oil. By just claiming it's all just oil weight is foolish. I'm sure if BMW made the switch to Shell, they communicated specific additive and additive concentrations in tandem with Shell.

Not to fan the flame of another oil argument, use whatever 10W60 YOU want. If something happens to the engine due to oil brand or additive package, well then at least YOU get to deal with that. No one else can be to blame right?

When was that ever not the case BMW always said you could use any 10w-60, they just recommend Castrol.

Nothing will happen as that is still an approved oil for your car.
