Whether that oil is Motul 5W40, or My favorite: Total 10W50, make sure there is a drawing of a checkered flack on the bottle, together with the words: "racing". M1 0W40 is simply not a racing spec oil. Is it a good oil? Yes. Is it super popular because of it's availability, and cost? Yes. Just read the back of the bottle carefully, Mobil rates it as being in the middle of the pack, with a strong recommendation for their stronger 5W30 for 15K mile oil changes. Note M1 0W40 is not recommended for extended drain intervals, and not their racing oil. That would be M1 5W50.

With all this being said, based on the current winter ambient temps, I will briefly use M10W40 for a track day in early April, but for my next one in May through October I will be switching to Total 10W50.
Not sure where you are getting your info from but it sounds kind of arbitrary. What is your evidence to support this? A street car driven on a track doesnt necessarily need "racing" oil. M1 is the factory fill for numerous high performance cars that are made for the track.
